Doctors have issued a warning to people who wear contact lenses after making a surprise - and slightly horrifying - discovery by chance.

A seemingly otherwise healthy woman, 33, decided to go to the doctors in China for a consultation about getting plastic surgery.

At this point, the woman had five contact lenses behind her eye and was completely unaware of this fact.

Interestingly, the woman wanted to get surgery due to being conscious about her facial asymmetry caused by an unrelated medical condition.

She wanted the procedure to make her eyes look more even and appeared to be suffering no other issues.

Initially doctors didn’t even notice there was an issue and suggested she should have a fat injection under sedation to plump up the left eye.

It was only after taking a closer look that they realized there was something wrong. Yeah I'd say so..

While they did the fat injection procedure ‘several transparent contact lenses migrated from the upper fornix’, according to a medical report in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.

The doctors described the incident as very ‘rare’ and warned hemifacial atrophy could be at increased risk while wearing contacts.

In the medical report, it read: “Following the double eversion of the left upper eyelid, a total of five soft contact lenses were discovered.

“After the operation, it was confirmed that the patient had been wearing contact lenses for many years. She recollected instances of losing her left contact lens several times many years prior. Interestingly, she had not experienced any ocular symptoms before this surgical intervention.”

The report also warned that those with the condition were at a greater risk of lenses becoming dislodged and getting hidden in spaces between the eye and eyelid.

Amazingly, this story isn’t the first of its kind...

US medic Dr. Kurteeva took to social media to share a story about a patient who needed to have more than 20 contact lenses removed from her eye.

The patient said she had felt something in their eye, with the ophthalmologist doing their best to identify the source of the pain.

But she quickly discovered there was a total of 23 individual contact lenses and the removal procedure is just as grim as you are thinking.

The video was captioned "Don't sleep in your contact lenses" and told viewers the patient had kept forgetting to remove her lenses before going to sleep and was putting new ones in every morning. Ouch.
