Throuple with four kids explains how date night works and who looks after the children

A woman who has spent 15 years in a relationship with two men has opened up about day-to-day life and the strict boundary that she credits with keeping her unconventional family together, revealing that the trio only found stability after realizing they were 'holding themselves back'.

Alexia Shrout, who shares her life with partners Doug Shrout and Jake Shrout-Mchaffie in Maumee, Ohio, said the three of them are raising four children together, and insists their household runs on the same logistics as any other family, just with an extra pair of hands.

Speaking about her polyamorous 'throuple', Alexia explained that the turning point in their relationship came when all three of them agreed to start individual therapy, something she says was essential once they realized they'd never actually set proper boundaries with one another.

"It helped us with raising our children, jobs, and love life," she said.

"We learned what boundaries were, so we didn't push ourselves too hard and did not leave room for us to grow as a throuple. We were holding ourselves back."

That breakthrough, she said, came only after years of trial and error, and it's one of several details Alexia has now shared publicly about what day-to-day life actually looks like inside a three-parent household.

How a three-parent household splits bills and childcare

According to Alexia, the family runs on a simple divide-and-conquer system. Doug and Jake both leave early for work each morning, while Alexia, who owns her own business, has a later start time that lets her handle school runs and doctor's appointments.

All three adults deposit their income into a single shared account, and their monthly bills are automated so there's little day-to-day management required.

Alexia said the arrangement means whoever's free at any given moment can step in, whether that's cooking dinner, running a child to school, or attending a school open evening.

She described the system as one of the biggest unexpected perks of the setup, saying there's rarely a moment when the house isn't being cleaned, or a task isn't being covered, because with three adults, someone is almost always available.

'Everyone was willing to sacrifice'

The couple's four children include two older sons, aged 21 and 18, who have both since moved out, an eight-year-old daughter named Tegan, and a teenage boy the family formally adopted a month ago after fostering him for six months.

Alexia said she personally handled much of the paperwork and home inspections required during the fostering and adoption process, with Doug and Jake pitching in when needed.

Bigger decisions, she said, are always made collectively.

When Alexia decided to buy into a business, a move that would initially mean less time at home, she said she wouldn't have gone ahead if Doug or Jake had objected.

"I only moved forward with buying into the business because everyone was willing to sacrifice," she explained.

Is a throuple relationship the same as a legal marriage?

Alexia said the trio held a full wedding ceremony together, complete with more than 100 guests, a shared cake-cutting, a father-daughter dance and a separate dance between the groom and Alexia's mother.

However, she confirmed the marriage isn't recognized by law, since only one legal partnership is permitted at a time under current regulations.

Asked how she responds to people questioning the legitimacy of the relationship, Alexia said her answer is always the same: "I don't need the government's permission to have a wedding or make vows."

She said the family has faced its share of judgement over the years, including relatives who refused to attend the wedding and friendships that ended once people found out about the relationship.

A video of the family previously went viral, she said, and drew a wave of negative comments online, something they chose to ignore rather than engage with in order to protect their mental health.

In one incident, Alexia said a man in a bar owned by her mother didn't realize who she was and began making derogatory comments about the viral video, only for her sister, who was working behind the bar that day, to have him thrown out.

Alexia said their youngest daughter, Tegan, has never known life any other way, having been born into the family.

She recalled Tegan once telling a school friend she had two dads and a mom, only for the friend to insist that meant her dads must be gay, and a teacher repeatedly and incorrectly referring to one of her fathers as her 'stepdad'.

'All of us do like to go on dates together'

Despite the criticism, Alexia said the family has also had plenty of people privately confide in her that they, too, are polyamorous but don't feel able to live openly for fear of judgement. She said sharing her own story is partly about making others in similar situations feel less alone.

Her advice to anyone considering a similar arrangement is to prioritize communication long before bringing another person into a relationship.

She warned that adding a third partner should never be viewed as a way to fix an already struggling relationship, and that anyone unable to have honest, uncomfortable conversations about boundaries likely isn't suited to polyamory.
