Heartbreaking new details emerge after grandparents stranded on roof with grandson were swept away in floodwaters

Megan Drye lost her parents and her seven-year-old son after their house collapsed in floods as they took refuge on the roof

The mom of a seven-year-old boy killed by floodwaters has shared more details after losing her son and parents.

Megan Drye had taken shelter on the roof of her home in Asheville, North Carolina with her son Micah and parents when Hurricane Helene hit.

The family had been waiting as the powerful flood waters rose around them either for the water to recede or for a rescue.

But the house holding them collapsed under the force of the flood sending them plummeting into the water.

Megan survived after becoming pinned between two pieces of debris, where she was rescued.

Tragically Micah and Megan's parents were swept away by the floods, with Micah's body being found a quarter of a mile from where his mom was rescued.

Now, the mom has shared heartbreaking details of the family's moments on the roof of their house.

Speaking to FOX Weather, she said that her son had appealed to Jesus for help.

She said: "He reached for something past flesh, past human, past anything that even grown adults, I think, would reach for.

"My son called out to the one God Almighty. And I think at that moment he was rescued, and he became my hero, and I think all of them carried me through that moment."

She added: "In the midst of the chaos, all I heard was God telling me to be still and to stop fighting the water.

"That was Him, that was prayers. That was prayers that told me to be still and to let the water carry me to where I needed to be rescued."

Recalling her own ordeal in the water, she said she had been carried to a place between two branches which had kept her afloat.

She said: "My grief today is unfathomable. I'm sorrowful. I feel broken.

"But what is the main thing that I take away from grief is the uplifting of all the prayers that I have received."

Megan's sister Jessica Drye Turner added further details, writing: "The roof did not collapse, the house did. Mama was clinging onto Micah and Daddy was struggling to hold onto Megan.

"He kept panicking and pushing her under. She had hold of a tree and was trying to hold on to him. The water took him.

"We believe Micah, mama and daddy waited until Megan was rescued before being received into the hands of Christ."

Recalling what was left of the house, Jessica said: "The waters have receded and there is nothing left standing except my dad’s law firm sign. And we've chuckled at that [because] he was so proud of that sign."

At least 130 people have died in Hurricane Helene according to reports from AP, including in Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Florida, and Tennessee.
