When a reporter casually asked Donald Trump about his Valentine’s Day plans with his wife Melania Trump, no one was prepared for the awkwardness that followed.

The President and First Lady’s love story kicked off back in 1998 at a party hosted by Paolo Zampolli. They began dating soon after, tied the knot in 2005, and welcomed their son Barron Trump the following year.

Over the years, the Trumps have surely spent several Valentine’s Days together, which makes Trump’s response to what happened on February 14th this year all the more puzzling.

As of late he usually fields questions aboard Air Force One on topics like the Russia-Ukraine tensions, Venezuela, and Iran, but this time a reporter tossed in an innocent curveball: “Did you have any Valentine’s Day plans with her?”

A Valentine’s Day question wasn’t altogether surprising. After seemingly mishearing the question but noticing that the reporter mentioned Melania, Trump initially responded with: “She’s on the plane, we have a movie star on the plane.” This was in reference to the First Lady’s film.

Once the reporter repeated the Valentine’s Day question, instead of a sweet anecdote or playful reply, Trump appeared genuinely caught off guard… and swiftly moved on without answering.

“Did I what?” he asked the reporter.

“Did you do anything for Valentine’s with her? Did you give her flowers?” the same reporter quizzed.

Trump responded with an awkward expression, and eventually said: “Better not tell you that. Goodbye, everybody.”

While laughing, he followed up with, “That’s the toughest question.”

You can watch the exchange below:

And so it seems Melania’s Valentine’s Day gift this year will remain a mystery for us. Still, Trump took the opportunity to praise and promote her film, Melania.

“No, she’s…I’m proud of the fact her movie’s so successful. It’s a tremendous hit,” the president said, before moving on to praise his wife for her work with children caught up in the Russia-Ukraine war.

“She does some very consequential work. I think you’re going to see in the end that she’s going to go down as one of the truly great first ladies when you see what she’s doing with Russia, Ukraine,” Trump continued. “She’s done a good job; she works very hard.”

Melania’s film failed to warm the hearts of critics, earning just 11 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. At the premiere, the First Lady shared how she feels about reactions to her latest venture.

“I’m very proud of the film so people may like it, may don’t like it, and that’s their choice,” she told CNN. “We achieved what we want to achieve. For myself, it’s already successful. I’m very proud of what we did.”

The couple were spotted at a dinner hosted at Mar-a-Lago on Valentine’s Day last Saturday. The president was filmed dancing on his own to a live band playing Lee Greenwood’s song “God Bless the U.S.A.”
