Shane Gillis praised for 'uncomfortable moment' where he called out podcast host for mocking people with Down syndrome

Comedian Shane Gillis has been applauded by fans after a video resurfaced online of the 'uncomfortable moment' he called out Andrew Schulz for mocking people with Down syndrome.

And trust me, it's a tough watch.

The 36-year-old was definitely out of his comfort zone in doing so, having been fired from Saturday Night Live back in 2019, before he even got on stage after clips of him making racial and homophobic jokes circulated online.

They came from the 'Matt and Shane's Secret Podcast', hosted by himself and fellow comedian Matt McCusker.

In one of their 500 strong episodes, Gillis said: “Let the f****** ch*** live there."

While also imitating a Chinese accent.

Yes, he was supposed to be a cast member on the program and was joining the crew at the same time as Bowen Yang who became the shows first Chinese-American to work there.

Gillis rang Yang before being fired to apologise to him.

Yang spoke about the incident with fellow cast member Kenan Thompson, with the conversation being published in Variety.

“I think he and I have done enough things in our careers now to really not [have] that be the definitive beginning or the thing that casts a pall over everything else that we do going forward," he said.

Five years later, Gillis returned to Saturday Night Live in 2024 as a host, and while introducing the show, he said: "I was fired from this show a while ago, but don’t look that up, please."

So, that's his history, and he seems like he's learned his lesson, and he's since educated others on humility.

Gillis was invited onto the Flagrant podcast to co-host alongside Schulz, and it was while on the show that he handed out those lessons.

Schulz and his fellow podcasters had pulled up a TikTok of a Down syndrome person dancing which for whatever reason they found funny.

Gillis said: "By the way these guys are awesome, they're having fun. For you guys to sit here and be like 'hahahahaha' let's bring it up and mock them, that's f***** up dude."

Interjecting, Schulz says: "We're mocking you."

He replies: "By using them as an insult."

Schulz then says: "Using? We're using you."

Gillis asks: "So you're insulting them by saying I look like them, or your insulting me by saying I look like them."

The whole thing was incredibly awkward to watch and cringey seeing Schulz not own what he was doing was wrong.

"No, no, no we're insulting you. This is you back in your victim thing," Schulz says.

Gillis replied: "No, no, I'm not being a victim, I'm saying the jokes you're doing it's not cool."

Adding: "You're making fun of these down syndrome dudes putting out TikTok videos."

While it was uncomfortable to watch, it would have been a lot easier for Gillis to sit idly by while Schulz and his crew mocked the poor Down syndrome person, instead he didn't stand for it and spoke out.
