Aileen Wuornos has become one of the most recognizable serial killers in history and has recently been immortalized in a new documentary.
Those fascinated by true-crime have probably come across the complex story of Wuornos before, but those who haven’t will still likely recognize her most chilling photos during her incarceration.
Wuornos was working as a prostitute when she robbed, shot and killed multiple men during a 12-month period in Florida between 1989 and 1990.

The bodies of six men were later discovered, however, the seventh alleged victim was never found.
While Wuornos initially insisted her innocence and argued that she was acting in self-defense, she ended up confessing to her crimes in 1991 and was sentenced to death.
The serial killer died by lethal injection on October 9, 2002, at the age of 46.

While there has long been a debate over what Wuornos’ final words were, the Florida Department of Corrections has reportedly kept a record of them.
Ahead of being executed, she said: “I'd just like to say I'm sailing with the rock, and I'll be back like Independence Day, with Jesus, June 6. Like the movie, big mother ship and all, I'll be back.”
Netflix recently decided to take a deep dive into the life and death of Wuornos in the new documentary titled Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers.
According to the streaming platform, the true-crime doc - which was directed by Emily Turner - looks at the ‘circumstances that shaped her life and crimes, and examines the broader questions surrounding her motivations and the judicial system’s response’.
Wuornos’ time on death row has long been a point of interest as she didn’t fit the traditional idea of what a 'serial killer' was at the time.
Prior to her death, Wuornos also took part in her own documentary, directed by filmmaker Nick Broomfield, called Aileen: Life and Death of a Serial Killer.

As part of this, she gave interviews which have repeatedly circulated on social media and shown her spouting conspiracy theories about her murders.
Wuornos argued that police were already following her when she killed these men and went as far as to say that the authorities were allegedly allowing her to commit such crimes.
She did not give any evidence to substantiate her claim that the police let her continue killing, however.
Aileen: Queen of the Serial Killers is available to stream on Netflix now.
