Prime Minister Boris Johnson has responded to reports of a Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Reports of cruise missile strikes on Ukraine's military missile command centres and military headquarters in Kyiv emerged out of this morning on Kyiv, along with claims of troop movements in the country's southern port city of Odessa.

Ukraine's Interior Ministry also said that Russian army units have been crossing the border in Kharkiv.

World leaders have begun issuing statements regarding the attacks, with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson releasing a statement earlier this morning.

The statement read, 'I am appalled by the horrific events in Ukraine and I have spoken to President Zelenskyy to discuss next steps.

'President Putin has chosen a path of bloodshed and destruction by launching this unprovoked attack on Ukraine.

'The UK and our allies will respond decisively.'

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss also issued a statement via Twitter, which read, 'I strongly condemn the appalling, unprovoked attack President Putin has launched on the people of Ukraine.

'We stand with Ukraine and we will work with our international partners to respond to this terrible act of aggression.'

Charles Michel, president of the European Council, has taken to Twitter to write, 'Spoke with President @ZelenskyyUa to condemn in the strongest possible terms Russia’s unjustified large scale military aggression against #Ukraine and express our strongest solidarity with Ukraine.

Today both the European Council and @G7 leaders will meet to agree on further steps against Russia’s illegal acts and in support of Ukraine.

'I call on President @KremlinRussia_E to stop this war immediately.'

EU leaders are set to hold an emergency meeting later today, in which they will discuss more severe sanctions on Russia.

Reuters is reporting that they will consider 'massive and severe consequences'.
