Twitter replaces website logo with Doge and people are confused

The logo change even caused Dogecoin’s price to surge

Twitter has replaced its logo on the homepage with an image of Doge, and naturally users have been left feeling slightly confused.

For those of you who haven’t been on the internet this decade, ‘Doge’ is an internet meme featuring a picture of Kabosu, a Shiba Inu dog, which later inspired its very own cryptocurrency, Dogecoin.

Elon Musk, meanwhile, is the Twitter CEO who likes to cause a bit of a reaction online, whether by bulldozing through everyone’s blue ticks or using the poo emoji for Twitter's official press emails.

While you may not have thought daft, dog-themed memes and tech entrepreneurs were a hugely natural fit, Musk has always been a fond supporter of Doge and, seemingly by extension, its crypto offshoot.

He's even currently embroiled in a legal battle after a $258 billion racketeering lawsuit accused him of running a pyramid scheme in support of Dogecoin.

Asking a US judge to throw out the suit, his lawyers said: "There is nothing unlawful about tweeting words of support for, or funny pictures about, a legitimate cryptocurrency that continues to hold a market cap of nearly $10 billion. This court should put a stop to plaintiffs' fantasy and dismiss the complaint."

Earlier today (Monday 3 April), Twitter users noticed that the social media platform’s logo – usually a blue-and-white design of a bird tweeting – had been replaced by an image of none other than Doge, leaving many scratching their heads.

One tweeted: “Elon what the f**k are you even doing with twitter at this point why is the bird logo a f**king doge?”

Many others felt it surely had to be a ‘very late April Fool’s’ prank, with another saying: “Doge for some reason is showing up on Twitter and I can only assume this was supposed to be an April Fools joke that took 3 days to roll out because no one knows how the site works anymore.”

Someone else said: “Has twitter been hacked by doge or is this a very late april fools.”

Many people were surprised - and confused - to see Doge.

A third wrote: “I can almost guarantee that the doge that showed up in the corner of twitter was meant to show up on april 1st instead of today lol.”

The logo change even caused Dogecoin’s price to surge, rising more than 20 percent to around $0.092 earlier this evening, according to CoinGecko, marking its highest in over a month.

UNILAD reached out to Twitter to see if it could explain the sudden change in logo, but we just received an automatic reply containing - you've guessed it - a poo emoji.
