Most travellers have their in-flight comfort routine down to a science, except for one key factor plane hoppers have been currently missing.
Noise-cancelling headphones, a neck pillow, and perhaps a pair of compression socks have been inarguable essentials, but health experts suggest there’s one small item missing from many people’s hand luggage that could make a noticeable difference on long flights: a tennis ball.
While it might sound unusual, packing a tennis ball has become an increasingly popular travel tip, and for good reason. Beyond its role on the court, the lightweight ball can help ease muscle tension and improve circulation when used correctly during air travel.
The idea is simple but effective. As passengers remain seated for hours in confined spaces, muscles can become stiff and blood flow restricted.

Osteopath and sleep therapist Tracy Hannigan explained to Metro that a tennis ball can act as a compact massage tool to relieve that discomfort mid-flight.
Hannigan advised: “If you wrap it in a small hand towel, shaped like a sausage, you can control it more easily and it will stay in place.”
Rolling the ball gently beneath the thighs, calves, shoulders, or lower back applies light pressure to tight muscles and promotes movement in areas prone to stiffness. The technique can be done discreetly in any plane’s economy seat and, according to Hannigan, helps offset some of the physical strain caused by prolonged sitting.

She also recommended combining the massage with simple stretches to enhance the benefits. She said: “Turn your chin towards your armpit and use your hand to gently stretch the opposite side of the neck.”
For easing lower back tension, she suggested crossing one leg over the other and hinging forward slightly, ‘as if you’re trying to touch your elbow to your foot’.
Frequent flyers have praised the method on online forums such as Reddit’s r/TravelHacks subreddit, where user Tmckhar confirmed the tennis ball tip, saying: “Pack a tennis ball/tension ball in your carry-on. Place it at the base of your spine near your tailbone. I do this when driving long periods and it helps with back pain.”

The best part is that a tennis ball is lightweight, inexpensive, and easy to pack — making it one of the simplest tools for maintaining comfort while travelling. It requires no special equipment or preparation and can be used almost anywhere.
So, before your next flight, it might be worth reserving a small space in your carry-on for a single tennis ball. According to experts, this small addition could be the secret to arriving at your destination feeling far more refreshed.
