Donald Trump’s support once again proved to be the ‘kiss of death’ as the New England Patriots lost the Super Bowl 13-29 to the Seattle Seahawks just days after the team’s owner met with the president.
The New England Patriots owner, Robert Kraft, rubbed shoulders with Trump at the premiere of the documentary film Melania on January 29, 2026.
Yet while the Trump didn’t come out and publicly endorse a specific team this year, even the brief time spent together was enough to invoke the president’s ‘curse’ in which his support in recent years has often spelt ruin and disaster for teams across the entire sporting spectrum.
Mingling with Trump so close to the Super Bowl was seemingly going to be a risky move for Kraft, given the US leader's terrible run with picking winners over the first year of his second term.

Kraft notably donated a whopping $1 million to Trump’s re-election campaign and reminded NFL fans of his close relationship with the POTUS over the years at the premiere.
Yet even Kraft himself might be coming to regret his most recent meeting, especially after the Patriots were demolished during this year’s nail biting NFL final.
Back in November, a similar fate befell the Commanders who lost to the Detroit Lions 44-22, shortly after being given a public note of support by Trump.

The Yankees also got hit hard by the Trump curse when they were spectacularly defeated by the Toronto Blue Jays at the ALDS series 3-1, again, shortly after being visited by Trump and cheered on.
A similar pattern also emerged at the Ryder Cup, when Trump visited Bethpage Black in the hope of bringing some luck to Team USA, yet once again, the curse appeared to strike when Europe instead dominated over their US rivals.

One of the most high profile instances of the curse took place in February last year, when Trump proudly predicted a win for the Kansas City Chiefs at the Super Bowl LIX.
Convinced that Patrick Mahomes would bring home victory, the president declared to Fox News: “I guess you have to say that when a quarterback wins as much as he has won, I have to go with Kansas City.”
This, incidentally soon spelt disaster for the team, when the Philadelphia Eagles scooped the win 40-22.
Trump also managed to jinx the 4 Nations Face Off NHL final between the USA and Canada that same year, when Canada reigned supreme just hours after Trump had threatened to annexe Canada to become the 51st state.
