Sporting fans across the globe have been left bamboozled by an Olympic pole vault champion who took on an 400m world record holder in the 100m sprint.

Sport is full of surprises, and that's the reason why we love it so much.

The huge upsets are the ones that provide the biggest talking points because of the shock factor they provide.

A huge sporting shock recently came ahead of the Zurich Diamond League Weltklasse, where Mondo Duplantis, a pole vault champion, set a personal best time.

Taking place on Wednesday (4 September), the Swede even beat Karsten Warholm in a 100m sprint race.

While that may not sound too impressive, it should be worth noting Warholm is a 400 metre world record holder.

Duplantis got out of the blocks incredibly well, before the Norwegian Warholm pulled side-by-side.

However, the Swede managed to eventually pull away and winning the running showdown.

"I'm pretty fired up. How could I not be?" the pole vaulter told reporters after the victory.

Meanwhile, Warholm said: "I gotta give it to Mondo, he beat me today fair and square. It was a great race, he was out of the blocks fast."

There was a lot of trash talking from the pair before the race, so it's good to see the athlete's maintain a great level of respect between each other.

A clip of the race has since been uploaded to Twitter and Reddit, leaving the majority of viewers baffled after tucking into the action.

"Bro is completing side quests atm," one person joked while a second added: "Good stuff. I'd love to see them do this again... this time over 200m.

Karsten would probably have the edge over the longer distance; or if not, it would probably be closer than today's race was."

Meanwhile, a third offered their view, saying: "We have to understand that to be the top world Pole Vault athlete you have to approach the bar at speeds close to 40 KM/H (25 MPH), not to mention the incredible strength that one must have in the upper limbs to withstand the energy that the pole exerts to return to its linearity. All this accompanied by incredible technique and body control."

While it was Duplantis who made all the headlines, Warholm did actually set a career record on Wednesday.

He did so by beating his already impressive 10.49 mark, which he obtained back in 2017.
