A senior Republican has claimed that President Donald Trump was an 'FBI informant' on the case of convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.
Mike Johnson told CNN that Trump has been 'misrepresented' in the controversy surrounding the Epstein files and the pressure on the administration to release all the information around the case.
It's been more than five months since Attorney General Pam Bondi said the files were sitting on her desk and waiting to be released, though the Department of Justice announced shortly afterwards that it would not release any further files related to the case. The DOJ added no such 'client list' exists.
However, the Trump administration later made a U-turn on the matter, announcing that all the FBI files, including the grand jury testimony, will be released.

"It’s a hoax that’s been built up way beyond proportion. I can say this, those files were run by the worst scum on Earth," said Trump.
"They were run by (former FBI director James) Comey, they were run by (former US attorney general Merrick) Garland, they were run by (former president Joe) Biden, and all of the people that actually ran the government.
"Those files were run by these people. They were run by my enemy. If there was anything in there, they would have used them for the election.”

Speaking to CNN, Johnson claimed that Trump had been 'misrepresented', explaining: “What Trump is referring to is the hoax that the Democrats are using to try to attack him.
“I’ve talked to him about this many times, many times. He is horrified. It’s been misrepresented. He’s not saying that what Epstein did is a hoax. It’s a terrible, unspeakable evil. He believes that himself.
“When he first heard the rumour, he kicked him out of Mar-a-Lago. He was an FBI informant to try to take this stuff down.”

Last week, GOP Rep Thomas Massie and Democrat Ro Khanna - who are collecting signatures for a bill that would require the Trump team to hand over all Epstein material - held a press conference with Epstein survivors, many of whom had never spoken out publicly.
The US House Oversight Committee released 33,295 pages of the heavily classified documents, including flight logs, jail surveillance video, court filings, audio recordings, and emails.

However, Democrats are arguing that the files that have been released contain little new information.

For example, they did not reveal an alleged 'client list', which the FBI has insisted does not exist.
