‘Ozempic meat’ explained as users describe bizarre side-effect of weight loss drug

Users report an unexpected aversion to meat after taking Ozempic

As the popularity of Ozempic continues to surge for its dramatic effects on appetite and body weigh, a new and unexpected side effect has entered the conversation: something users have dubbed ‘Ozempic meat'.

Across social media platforms and forums, people taking Ozempic or its sister drug Wegovy have described a sudden aversion to foods they once enjoyed. Some say their appetite has vanished altogether, while others report that certain meals now taste unpleasant or even repulsive.

Among the most common complaints is a newfound dislike for meat, particularly fatty or fried varieties.

Alyssa Fraser, a former food reporter from Minnesota, told Live Science that after she began using Wegovy, she ‘became disinterested in food’, and that some proteins started to taste ‘too much like the barnyard the animal came from’. Even her favorite wine, she added, seemed oddly ‘vegetal'.

Scientists are beginning to investigate this phenomenon. A recent study published in Food Quality and Preference found that people using GLP-1 medications (the class of drugs that includes Ozempic, Wegovy, and Zepbound) reported eating roughly 700 fewer calories per day. They also reduced their intake of processed foods, soda, refined grains, and beef, while increasing their consumption of fruit, leafy greens, and water.

John Blundell, an emeritus professor of psychobiology at the University of Leeds, believes the change may stem from how GLP-1 medications alter the relationship between taste, desire, and satiety. He explained: “Liking a food is different from wanting it."

He essentially summarizes that people can still have a liking and desire for those certain foods, even if their response to them is different; they just have less of an immediate urge to eat them.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite, acting on receptors throughout the body, including in the brain’s reward circuits. This mechanism not only suppresses hunger but may also dampen the pleasure response linked to food.

Some evidence even suggests the medications could affect taste perception directly.

GLP-1 receptors have been found in human taste buds, and early studies indicate that people taking semaglutide may experience heightened sensitivity to sweet flavors.

For some users, these changes can make familiar foods taste overpowering or unpleasant.

One long-term Wegovy user told Live Science that her go-to panang curry ‘just didn’t taste right anymore’. Others say that the smell of cooked meat now turns their stomachs entirely.

This has been backed up by some Reddit users talking about this on related sub-reddits, too. One user noted: “My wife takes Ozempic. In the first half of the weekly dose's effect nearly turns her vegetarian. It's pretty distinctive.”

Although some reactions to particular foods seem to depend on both the combination of the specific modification and the person, reaffirming some of the study’s claims, but differing from others.

For example, one now-deleted user previously shared: “I’ve been on Zepbound and I surely eat a lot less, but meat has been one of the few things I want. Sweets have been the game-changer for me. Couldn’t pass a piece of chocolate to save my life. The late-night hunger demons are gone too.”
