Old iPhone sells for £30,000

The iPhone was sold in mint condition fifteen years after its release

The first generation iPhone in its original box has sold for a whopping $35,414 (£30,000) at auction.

The iPhone was arguably the device that truly kickstarted Apple's business and without it, the company wouldn't be what it is today.

"iPhone is a revolutionary and magical product that is literally five years ahead of any other mobile phone," the late Steve Jobs said as he unveiled the iPhone at the keynote in 2007.

RR Auction

This particular device was auctioned off at RR Auction, which ended on 18 August.

The product description reads: "Unopened first generation original Apple iPhone, Model A1203, Order MA712LL/A (8GB).

"The box features a life-size image of the iPhone with twelve icons on the screen, indicating that it is from the earliest production (2007); a 13th icon, for iTunes, came later in the year. In brand new, factory-sealed condition."

RR Auction

The first iPhone comes in at 115 x 61 x 11.6 mm (4.53 x 2.40 x 0.46 in) in size and just 135 g (4.76 oz) in weight.

The display is a mere 3.5 inches and the main, single camera is just 2mp.

Despite the fact that smartphones have advanced so much in recent years, the rarity of the iPhone combined with the mint condition is what's given the device such a mega value.

Explaining why it sold for so much, the RR description adds: "Developed in secrecy, the original iPhone is the smartphone that transformed the industry, revolutionising cellphone design as one of the first 'slate' form factor phones.

"The iPhone removed nearly all physical controls in favour of an easy-to-use capacitive touchscreen interface.

"It put the internet into our pockets with the first full-featured mobile web browser, and essentially launched the market for apps with the introduction of the App Store, making third-party applications easy to access and download.

"The iPhone ushered in the modern age of the smartphone, and catapulted Apple to the top of the charts as one of the world's most valuable companies."

RR Auction

A first generation Apple iPod was also sold on the auction site for an eye-watering $25,000 (£22,000).

The description reads: "Sought-after unopened first generation original Apple iPod (5GB), Model M8541, Order M8513LL/A.

"The top of the box features the iconic Apple logo in white-on-gray, with the cube's sides showing front and side views of the iPod and listing the pioneering music player's specifications. In brand new, factory-sealed condition."
