A man has been marched to the police by his mother after she recognised him on CCTV footage relating to a train robbery.

On Tuesday, February 15 at 2.07pm a train conductor on a Metra Electric Line was robbed at gunpoint as the train arrived at the Van Buren Street Station in downtown Chicago.

CCTV footage caught 18-year-old Zion Brown allegedly pulling a gun on the driver and taking cash before fleeing on foot.

However, photos from the incident were circulated and Brown was recognised by none other than his mother, who took him to the police station where he was later arrested.

The court heard that as soon as Brown's mum recognised him, she immediately took the Loyola University Chicago student down to the Calumet City police department to turn himself in, The Mirror reports.

In the CCTV footage, Brown can be seen wearing an all-black attire, made up of a hoodie, trousers, a jacket and then some white trainers.

The footage captures Brown walking away from the scene, leaving behind a train conductor with their hands raised.

Brown allegedly took a total of $110 from the conductor as per CWB Chicago. He reportedly ditched his weapon after the incident took place, before then going on to attend college.

The weapon was stated in court as having allegedly actually been a BB gun.

Brown's defence attorney stated the teenager - who has no criminal background - had needed to eat before class and had been hungry, which they tried to argue to Judge Maryam Ahmad had spurred Brown on to commit the robbery.

However, Judge Ahmad was reportedly unimpressed by the direction of the argument and countered that she had also once been a college student who felt hungry, but hadn't taken it upon herself to commit an armed robbery.

Judge Ahmad subsequently granted the state's request to not allow Brown bail.

The 18-year-old is next scheduled to appear in court on March 4.
