Jean Todt, the ex-Formula 1 boss, has assured fans that F1 legend Michael Schumacher is 'in good hands' as he provides a rare health update on the former Ferrari driver.

The seven-time Formula 1 World Champion continues to recover from a horrific accident he suffered in the French Alps in 2013, where he was left with severe brain injuries.

Since the accident, Schumacher's heath has been kept private.

Todt - who is one of few people allowed to see the F1 driver - said that he visits him on occasion, three times a week.

The former Ferrari boss thanked fans for the continued support and gave a brief update on his condition.

Michael Schumacher is regarded as one of the greatest F1 drivers of all time.

He told Bild: “I’m happy that the fans, not only in Germany, think of him so much.

“People ask so much about Michael. The fans should know that he is in the best of hands.

“In the best situation he can be and surrounded by people who love him.”

Todt also said he will continue to support the Schumacher family.

“As long as I am in this world, I will always visit him,” he added.

“Sometimes we see each other three times a week, sometimes not for a whole month.

“They are my friends, and we are in constant contact. Whatever I can do for the Schumacher family, I‘ll do it.”

Schumacher has not been seen in public since the accident, as he is being treated privately at his family home in Geneva, Switzerland.

Schumacher's wife, Corinna, broke down in tears as the F1 icon was awarded the State Prize of North Rhine-Westphalia in July.

The award was accepted on behalf of Schumacher by his wife and their daughter, Gina-Maria.

Around the same time, Todt shared an update about Schumacher's health and revealed he still watches races with him.

Updates on Schumacher's health have been rare since the accident.

He said: "I don't leave him alone. Him, Corinna, the family, we‘ve had so many experiences together.

“The beauty of what we have experienced is part of us and it goes on.

“Sometimes success and money changes you. But Michael has never changed. He‘s so strong.”

Since Schumacher's accident, his son Mick has graduated to Formula 1.

The German driver is currently in his second season in the sport and races for the American team Haas.

Like his father, Mick has links to Ferrari and is currently part of their junior driver programme.
