If you are ever in a situation where you’re alone and choking on an object, use these three tips to save your own life.

According to the National Safety Council, 5,553 people died in the US in 2022 from choking, with people aged 71 being more at risk.

Usually, choking occurs when we eat things, and oftentimes, we dine with other people.

However, that’s not always the case. If you’re alone, it can be hard to find help, leaving you vulnerable to things going wrong.

However, a doctor online, has shared his tips on getting out of the situation, which could help you out.

Doctor Jorge Moreno, revealed that there are three things you can do to dislodge the food from your windpipe.

Step one

According to the healthcare expert, the first step is a big one, and if you can do it, it might save you some vital time.

He said: “If you have a smart watch or you have your phone nearby, dial 911 immediately. If you can do that, that will at least get the emergency services on the way.”

Alternatively, if you can’t call anyone, just move onto the below.

Step two

Doctor Moreno moved on to his other tip, which includes hitting yourself with your fist.

He said: “You want to create a fist, and you want to put that above your belly button, and then you want to take your other hand and push upward and inward in order to get - expel the food out.”

He also said you’d want to do ‘three to five big thrusts’ so that you can ‘expel the food’ from your windpipe.

Step three

This one involves the use of a chair.

The doctor explained that if you lean over a chair, with your head forward, and the top of the backrest pushing against the top of your belly button, you can also dislodge food that way.

But you need to push hard, inward and upward to get that motion going.

People in the comments were grateful for this advice, as choking on your own is a major fear a lot of people have.

After all, if you can’t breathe and have limited time before passing out, having nobody around you to help would be such a panic.

However, if you can employ these tips, it might give you the intervention you need to remove the blockage yourself.

Now, this makes me feel better prepared.
