Dry January just got a whole lot easier thanks to a non-alcoholic spirit said to give you a ‘gentle buzz’ similar to the real deal.

Each year, thousands of people across the globe take the 31-day vow of sobriety affectionately known as Dry January.

There are different reasons why you may want to abstain from alcohol for a month. Perhaps you drank too many Eggnoggs over the silly season. Or, you want to start flirting with a healthier, sober-curious lifestyle during your ‘New Year, New Me’ crusade.

Regardless of your reasons, limiting your alcohol intake can have a positive effect on your health and cognitive functions. It can also save you a wad of cash, boost your energy, and help you lose weight, according the NHS.

But if you’re already craving your end-of-the-day stress relief then there’s a non-alcoholic spirit that may be just what you’re looking for. Introducing Sentia Spirits.

What is Sentia Spirits?

Sentia is a non-alcoholic, zero percent ABV beverage created by Professor David Nutt.

The neuropsychopharmacologist, whose career has been dedicated to ‘understanding how alcohol, drugs, and substances can affect our bodies’.

In 2021, he launched Sentia Spirits with the promise of making users ‘more sociable’ and relaxed.

“It’s a drink that is based on the science of alcohol, particularly the low doses of alcohol that relax you and make you more sociable,” he told The Independent.

“We’ve spent years researching the biochemistry of herbs to find ones which contain GABA molecules, and also those which have a track record of producing relaxation and calming effects."

This botanical spirit, described by Nutt as a ‘GABA spirit’, is designed to mimic the effects of alcohol on the brain, intending to calm your nervous system down and leave you hangover-free.

Jesus College Cambridge lists Sentia as ‘using naturally-occurring botanicals to create the drinks’ is the ‘first step towards making social drinking healthier and safer.’

And while Nutt himself doesn’t think alcohol will ever fully lose its appeal, he’s hoping his product will help people ‘socialize without having to use alcohol’.

What Sentia Spirits are available?

Right now there are three different flavors of Sentia available to buy. These include Sentia Red, a Black version, and a brilliant bottle of liquid Gold.

Sentia Black is designed for more social tipples like parties, while Sentia Red, with its bittersweet berry taste, is essential for a weekday wind-down.

Meanwhile, the Gold edition helps to ‘bring warmth and wellness to social gatherings’—essentially posing as the go-to drink for last-minute plans and functions with friends.

You can drink yours neat with a mixer, or even in a cocktail.

According to The Independent, GABA Labs hopes to complete FDA testing of alcarelle in the US by 2026, with the ingredient available to purchase by 2027.

But until then, the Sentia spirits could be the solution to living your best sober life without missing out on any of the fun.

What do customers have to say about Sentia?

Thousands of non-alcoholic spirit drinkers have already been persuaded to try Sentia, with one customer remarking they 'definitely got a buzz, felt smiley and chilled almost immediately and stayed that way for quite a while. Felt fine the next morning too'.

A second said: “A gentle buzz and a nice new addition to the drinks cabinet.”

“First time trying and was a bit unsure, but gave me a slight nice calm feeling after one glass, taste is down to personal preference but with a mixer it was quite enjoyable, It is quite expensive but id buy again once this bottle is done as its unique and no longer drink alcohol,” remarked someone else.

You can buy bottles of Sentia’s non-alcoholic spirit via Amazon now.
