A raid of a Chinese restaurant uncovered that customers who had been ordering its 'roast duck' dish may have been eating something entirely different.

Jin Gu is located in the Usera district of Madrid, the capital of Spain, and towards the end of March, police raided the establishment after receiving various complaints.

Following the police raid, the restaurant was subsequently shut down after being found to have violated numerous health codes.

Police found a cockroach-infested kitchen and products, such as meat and fish, lacking a label. The smell was so bad that one Madrid Municipal Police officer even commented on it.

"Everything smelled of rotten seafood; it was almost unbearable," they told local news outlet El Mundo. But that's not all they found.

Police found plucked pigeons, with it being reported by El Mundo that staff were catching the bird off the streets and 'kicking them to death'.

As well as this, there were eight freezers allegedly containing unlabelled product, with no sell-by-date in sight and leaving them untraceable.

The fire extinguisher were also not stored correctly - they did not meet the required minimum height in which they are needed to be positioned - while emergency doors were blocked off by rubbish bins.

It also didn't have any thermometers in its storage facilities to measure and monitor the temperature, which is a legal requirement in Spain.

And that's just what they found in the known parts of the building.

A 'secret room' located behind a shelf in the disabled toilet was also discovered that was not on the plan, containing up to 300kg of rotten food inside of rusty freezers, according to police.

Strips of meat were left to dry on a clothesline, while officers discovered rat traps with meat as bait and a fan covered in grease.

This discovery ultimately led to the restaurant's closure, with the owner of Jin Gu is being investigated for alleged crimes relating to animal cruelty, crimes against public health and consumer rights.

Locals claim they had been reporting the restaurant to the authorities on numerous occasions.

"None of us ate there," one local told the Spanish outlet. "It smelled bad, and we saw food brought in on a cart and left at the door in broad daylight."

It may come as a surprise to some that the restaurant boasted of 4.2 stars on Google - although, one reviewer commented on how bony the 'roast duck' was.

"The duck I think is a little dry and lots of bones, not that tasty," they posted five years ago.
