In the run-up to the 30th anniversary of Selena's death, her killer has been denied early release.

The music sensation was murdered by Yolanda Saldívar, who went on to be convicted of first-degree murder and has been behind bars ever since.

Selena was just 23 years old at the time of her death in 1995. Saldívar is said to have been confronted about allegedly embezzling $30,000 for a Selena fan group she ran on the day of Selena's death.

Her defence at the time argued that the gun she had that shot the singer in the back went off accidentally, but the jury wasn't convinced, and Saldívar, now 64, was sentenced to life imprisonment.

Now, after being behind bars for three decades, Saldívar was eligible for parole — but her petition has been denied.

Documents from Texas Department of Criminal Justice online records read, as per ABC 6: "After a thorough consideration of all available information, which included any confidential interviews conducted, it was the parole panel's determination to deny parole to Yolanda Saldivar and set her next parole review for March 2030.

"The reason provided by the panel for denial was the Nature of the Offense: The record indicates that the instant offense has elements of brutality, violence, assaultive behavior or conscious selection of victim's vulnerability indicating a conscious disregard for the lives, safety, or property of others, such that the offender poses a continuing threat to public safety."

In light of the news that Saldívar will remain in prison, Selena's family have issued a statement.

"Today, we are grateful that the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles has chosen to deny parole for Yolanda Saldívar," a post shared to Selena's official Instagram page began.

"While nothing can bring Selena back, this decision reaffirms that justice continues to stand for the beautiful life that was taken from us and from millions of fans around the world far too soon."

The statement continued: "Selena's legacy is one of love, music, and inspiration. She lived with joy, gave selflessly, and continues to uplift generations with her voice and spirit.

"As her family and loved ones, we remain committed to preserving her memory and ensuring that her story is honored with the dignity and respect it deserves."

Selena's loved ones proceeded to thank the singer's fans for their ongoing support.

"Your love has been a source of strength and healing," they said.

"We will continue to celebrate Selena’s life — not the tragedy that took her from us — and we ask that all who cherish her do the same."
