Linkin Park fans are speculating the band could be making a comeback with a new frontman after Chester Bennington passed away in 2017.

Bennington was found dead at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California in July 2017, after rising to fame with Linkin Park in the early Noughties.

Over the years the band gained a huge fanbase with their seven studio albums, with tracks like 'In The End' still remaining firm favorites to this day.

The group went on hiatus after Bennington died, but on Saturday (August 24), the band updated its website with a mysterious countdown timer which started at 100 hours.

The countdown is set to end on Wednesday (August 28), at which point fans are expecting a big announcement - and a lot of people already think they know what it is.

As Linkin Park would be in need of a frontman in order to make a comeback, many fans have suggested the announcement could relate to someone taking over from Bennington.

A lot of people expressed hope that they'd be able to hear the band perform again, with one person writing: “I hope they announce the new singer, LP deserves to continue [with] their legacy."

However, other social media users have taken the speculation one step further, by discussing exactly who the new frontman could be.

You see, just a couple of days after Linkin Park launched its countdown timer, fellow band Sum 41 put a post on their social media which told fans to 'tune in Wednesday morning'.

"Deryck Whibley announcement," it added, referring to the band's lead vocalist.

The timing of the announcement caught the attention of Linkin Park fans, and as a result many people believe Whibley could soon be the newest member of Linkin Park.

"Rumor is the lead singer of Sum 41 is going to go on tour the new singer for LINKIN PARK," one Twitter user wrote.

Another added: "Dude from Sum 41 gonna be Linkin Park’s new singer???"

While some fans are just curious to see whether their suspicions are correct, others have mixed feelings about the possibility of Whibley joining the band.

One person included a crying emoji as they commented: "He's disbanded Sum 41 to join Linkin Park hasn't he."

Another added: "Hearing rumours of Sum41 front man Deryck Whibley joining Linkin Park. Ugh, I hope not. No hate to him, I just don't think it's the right fit. Honestly, I'd prefer if they just get a female singer instead, so no one can make Chester comparisons."

However, others have shared their excitement for the potential announcement, with one commenting: "Honestly if Deryck is the new stand in vocalist for Linkin Park they have picked a great choice, he’s already proven he can sing a bunch of their songs and I have confidence he will smash it."
