The Boys star Chace Crawford has explained why his character’s comically large bulge was edited out of the Amazon Prime series after it went viral in 2019.

The Deep's genetically blessed package first came to light three years ago, after an Amazon promotional calendar went viral when fans clocked the character’s prominent bulge, which was in fact a prosthetic penis, under his form-fitting superhero suit.

Following the furore the superhero shoot caused online, Chace has now addressed the hysteria and explained that The Deep was always supposed to be very well-endowed, but showrunners were ordered to edit it out of the series by the streaming giant.

The former Gossip Girl actor added that producers had to use CGI to shrink his character’s appendage in post production, in scenes that had already been filmed.

Speaking to Daily Mail Australia, Crawford said: "[Showrunner Eric] Kripke was like, ‘We get no notes from Amazon, but the first one we got was that can't f*****g happen, we've got to take that out.'

"And we had to edit it out."

At the time, the image caused a stir and had one fan writing on social media, "If the satirical @chacecrawford calendar shoot for @TheBoysTV was supposed to get me to watch it – yeah, I'm going to watch this."

While another asked: "Here’s a water-cooler topic for today: Did someone forget to Photoshop or did someone remember to Photoshop?"

Crawford previously acknowledge the attention the shoot received and admitted he got 'a lot of love' in his DMs after it came out.

He told Entertainment Weekly at the time: “I got a lot of weird DMs in my inbox. A lot of love, a lot of love!”

The TV star also said the spicy shot wasn’t an error and is actually tied to a plot in the show, although he promised co-creator Eric Kripke he’d keep it a secret.

Crawford added: “There is a story behind that but I’m sworn to secrecy by Eric Kripke.

“I wish I could give you a good answer, but we’ll never know. It will forever remain a mystery. We will never know!

“I thought it was so funny, but I don’t think anyone got a bigger kick out of it than Eric Kripke. He thought it was the funniest thing in the world. Oh God.

“It was probably a little bit over-covered, but I was like, ‘Whatever The Deep can do for you guys to get some press, you know I’m ready to support the show!’ That was one I had to explain to a few people.”

The Boys is available to stream on Amazon Prime Video now.
