Horror flick Terrifier 2 has been officially submitted for Oscar consideration - and with the way everything else has gone this year, I see no reason why it can’t get itself a win.

The gory-horror has turned out to be a bit of an unexpected hit despite - or maybe because of - the fact that it left people vomiting and passing out in cinemas.

Terrifier 2 follows on from the first movie, and this time centres on Art the Clown haunting a teenage girl and her brother on Halloween. You can see the trailer here, if you’re feeling brave:

Made on a budget of just $250,000, Terrifier 2 has pulled in more than $8 million at the box office.

And the impressive numbers don’t stop there - due to the extreme nature of the movie, Terrifier 2 was expected to only be released in a ‘handful of theatres’, however, over Halloween weekend this ballooned to a whopping 1,500. Not too bad for a relatively unknown movie funded via Indiegogo, right?

And now, to cap off an already impressive run, its distributor Bloody Disgusting has officially submitted it for Oscar consideration - and it's already caught The Academy's attention.

In a post on its website, Bloody Disgusting explained: “No, it will never actually happen. Yes, it’s a total goof.

"But you know what? The thought of having members of the Academy endure an extreme unrated horror movie that they would otherwise consider beneath them? That’s just too hilarious of an opportunity to pass up.” Well, I’m 100 percent sold on the idea.

Bloody Disgusting is urging fans of the flick to tag @TheAcademy on Twitter using the hashtag #OscarsForArt to try and drum up some more buzz for the film.

And The Academy has noticed - responding to the post announcing the news from Bloody Disgusting, the official Academy Twitter account posted several eye emojis.

Despite the fact that the whole thing is just a bit of a laugh, Terrifier 2 has actually earned itself some very decent reviews.

On review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes it has 88 percent, with an audience score of an almost-equally impressive 82 percent.

Meanwhile, on Twitter fans have already been calling on the movie to win an Oscar with one person writing: “'So when does the @TerrifierFilm Oscar buzz start? David Howard Thornton's performance as Art the Clown is PERFECT, with no dialog he maximises his screen time like no other!”

Another said: “Hey @TheAcademy , we all know what the best film of 2022 is going to be. Just sayin'. #OscarsForArt #Terrifier2 #Screambox.”
