Stranger Things has set an all-time streaming record, with fans racking up billions of minutes of watch-time since season four dropped.

The hit Netflix show had a whopping 7.2 billion minutes of viewing time from between 30 May and 5 June, according to figures from Nielsen.

The rankings, which were introduced two years ago, show that in the week prior – from 23 May to 29 May – Stranger Things had 5.14 billion minutes viewing, bringing the two-week total to 12.34 billion minutes.

The numbers are all the more impressive, because no show measured in Nielsen’s data has even managed to hit the six billion mark in a single week, let alone top seven billion.

The previous highs were during the pandemic lockdown in 2020, when Tiger King and Ozark both managed to gain more than five billion minutes of viewing time.

Although the Nielsen data counts any time spent watching any episode of a specific title, it’s believed that the huge Stranger Things numbers come from the drop of season four volume one.

And this isn’t the only record season four has broken, it was also Netflix's most viewed season of English language TV in one week and the first season to reach number one in 83 countries on the streamer's top 10.

It was finally toppled from the top spot when The Umbrella Academy's third season landed on 23 June.

However, now the second batch of episodes of Stranger Things has landed its likely to reclaim the top spot.

The show returned to Netflix on 27 May with volume one of season four - the second volume landed yesterday, consisting of just two episodes, one of which comes in a bumper two-hours-18-minutes.

Fans had waited almost three years for the fourth season, but it’s fair to say they’ve not been disappointed.

Posting on Twitter one happy viewer wrote: “Stranger Things season 4 was absolutely f**king insane. By far the best season, it had everything. So much emotion in this season. I need season 5 now.”

Another said: “The Stranger Things finale was INCREDIBLE! So many emotions man. It was just so good. I can’t wait for season 5!”

While someone else wrote: “Stranger Things part 2 is the best piece of television I’ve seen in years.”

All episodes of Stranger Things season four are available to stream on Netflix right now.
