Robert Downey Jr has finally earned his first 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

And he did it with the help of his dad

After almost four decades in the business, Robert Downey Jr has finally earned his first ever 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes - an honour more prestigious than any award.

In the past, the star's films have come close to achieving a perfect score, like Richard III (1996), which starred Downey Jr as Lord Rivers and Ian McKellen as the titular King Richard III, achieving an overall score of 96 percent.

Or, in a tie for the second best spot are the actor's films Short Cuts (1993) and True Believer (1989) - both earning a 95 percent score.

His iconic performance as Iron Man has earned him some top rankings on the film review website, with both Avengers: End Game and Iron Man performing the best with a score of 94 percent.

But Robert's new documentary flick Sr., which explores the life and career of his dad Robert Downey Sr, has made it to the top of the pile, after being met with rave reviews.

Yes, the sweet documentary about his late father, the pioneering filmmaker, is officially Robert Downey Jr's highest-rated film on Rotten Tomatoes, beating out any of his Marvel or Sherlock movies.

An official synopsis of Sr. reads: "From documentarian Chris Smith comes a lovingly irreverent portrait of the life, career, and last days of maverick filmmaker Robert Downey Sr., whose rebellious spirit infused decades of counterculture movie-making.

Sr. widens the lens from Downey's art to the life with which it was deeply intertwined, including an intimate examination of his relationship with son Robert Downey, Jr. Shot over the course of three years, the film truly honours Senior's nonlinear, outlaw-like approach, including capturing his decision to embark on his own concurrent and final film project.

"Smith’s portrait of a family and an artist is a meditation on life that’s as surreal as it is sentimental, a celebration of making art with no rules that tosses out its own rulebook along the way."

Although the film has only received a handful (22, to be exact) of reviews so far, they've all been glowing, and are getting fans excited to watch the touching tribute when it drops on Netflix tomorrow (2 December).

One critic writes: "There are several layers to this documentary, each becoming more poignant and revealing than the last in its search for deeper meaning. Throughout, though, the genuine love this family have for each other and the creative process is unmistakable."

Another describes the film as a 'non-fiction biopic that’s infused with the unique humour and creativity of its subject, as well as steeped in the complicated but palpable love shared by a father and son.'

Currently, Sr. has a stellar 100 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, and is Robert Downey Jr's only film to achieve this.

Meanwhile, on the other end of the scale, some of Robert Downey's worst-reviewed films include the 1999's Friends and Lovers (7 percent), the 2020 film Dolittle (15 percent) and 1990 action flick Air America (13 percent).

Say what you will about Robert Downey Jr. , but you can't deny the guy has range.

Sr drops on Netflix on Friday, 2 December.
