A drama that Stephen King hailed as 'thought-provoking' and 'very scary' has been viewed for some 134 million hours on Netflix.

The celebrated author is always on-the-ball with his TV series recommendations - from a show with a 'flat-out terrific' first episode to a 'smart' series both critics and fans love.

Now, Netflix subscribers are still recommending a 96 percent rated series that King labeled 'witty and very, very sharp'.

The supernatural drama centers on Dr Kristen Bouchard (Katja Herbers), a forensic psychologist who works with David Acosta (Mike Colter), a priest‑in‑training, and Ben Shakir (Aasif Mandvi), a tech‑savvy contractor.

Hired by the Catholic Church, the trio investigates unexplained phenomena - miracles, hauntings, possessions - to determine whether there’s a rational explanation or something genuinely supernatural at play.

As cases mount, their personal lives become deeply interwoven with the events - and the people - involved.

The series in question is called Evil, and it's racked up a 96 percent Rotten Tomatoes score as well as 134.4 million hours viewed, according to FlixPatrol.

Those figures alone cover just 18 months - January 2024 to June 2025 - meaning the actual figures are likely much higher.

The first season aired on CBS in September 2019, with seasons two the four continuing on Paramount+ before joining Netflix in the US.

And while fans were promised up to six seasons of the show, it was sadly cut short after season four.

In a PBS interview, King said of the series: “There’s a show called Evil on Paramount+ that I like. It’s great. It’s funny and it’s witty and it’s very, very sharp.”

A week after the show's final episode aired, Dr Kristen actress Herbers shared the clip on Twitter, adding: “OK, can we do the pick up now? Thank you, Stephen King.”

King then went on to quote Herbers’ post, further sharing his thoughts on Evil, writing: “Smart, thought-provoking, occasionally VERY scary. Plus, the chemistry between the three evil-hunters is strong and… to quote Kamala [Harris]… joyful.”

Rotten Tomatoes critics, alongside their 96 percent score, said of the show's first season: “Smartly-written and effectively unsettling, Evil works best when it dares to delve into the depths of the uncomfortable questions it poses.”

The show also recently became a topic of discussion over on Reddit, where one social media user asked for some 'lesser-known' shows to stream.

One stand-out response detailed: “Evil is a great show that I'd never heard of until this year.”

They continued: “Four seasons of demons, exorcisms, sin, sex, silliness and skepticism.” If that hasn't tempted you, I'm not sure what else will!

All four seasons of Evil are streaming now on Netflix in the US.
