The Little Mermaid gets slammed for teaching ‘girls to give up their voice and their powers for a man’

Singer Paloma Faith was less than impressed by the live-action Disney remake.

Paloma Faith has blasted Disney's live-action version of The Little Mermaid and claimed it's teaching children a bad message.

The singer posted a story to Instagram after taking her kids to see the new film during its opening weekend.

However, walking out of the theatre, the mother-of-two was left less than impressed.

Faith took issue with the film's message in a since-deleted Instagram story.

While she praised Halle Bailey's performance as the flamed-haired mermaid, she said there's a dark underside to the storyline.

"Just seen the new Little Mermaid with my kids, and while I think Halle gives an amazing performance and it's great casting, as a mother of girls, I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man," the 'Can't Rely On You' singer penned.

"Wtf is this s**t?! Not what I want to be teaching next-gen women at all."

However, her comments were met with fierce backlash.

One person wrote on Twitter: "The Little Mermaid is one of the most misunderstood stories ever; it was never about a man.

"Ariel sings her, 'I Want', song before she meets Eric cause she wants to go to the surface, be part of that world; Eric is just the representation of it, of everything she isn't allowed to be."

Another said: "Feel like it’s a little late to be mad about a movie that came out in 1989."

A third commented: "Surely she can’t be talking about the same Ariel who was dragging Vanessa by the scalp and stomping on that dress to get her voice back?"

While another clapped back: "Not only is this the exact same plot from the original movie, but I’m tired of this narrative because if y’all actually paid ATTENTION to the movie you’d know Ariel wanted to be human WAY before she even saw and fell in love with Eric so she didn’t give up her voice for a MAN."

One user also pointed out how Faith even tweeted back in 2009: "When I grow up, I want to be the Little Mermaid."

Well, that's a tad awkward, isn't it?

Not saying we can't change and evolve our stance, but what did the singer think she was walking into?

Maybe next time, she should stay home and binge The Queen's Gambit.

Forget about showing the kiddos Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella.
