Fans of True Detective have had plenty to talk about lately after a fourth season of the popular show dropped.

The anthology show takes to the fictional town of Ennis in Alaska for its new setting.

In this town there is an extended period without any sunlight, known as the Polar Night, where the sun doesn't rise for months.

It's the perfect setting for detectives Liz Danvers [Jodie Foster] and Evangeline Navarro [Kali Reis] to put aside their differences and work together.

Only the first episode is out so far but there are already thoughts about what could be next for the iconic show.

And it all goes back to the much-loved characters from the first season.

On April 2023 creator Nic Pizzolatto posted a picture of himself with stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

In the post he spoke about a table read-through of a new season which would see the two stars coming back.

The caption read: "That's a wrap on the complete table read for True Detective - The Return.

"Shame we'll probably never get to film it... What a story. Ah, well... Always fun to see these two."

Someone took to the comments to ask why there was no possibility of this despite there being a lot of demand.

They wrote: "With the overwhelming demand for this reprisal, will we ever get an answer as to why the hell not?"

The Instagram post had people asking about a new season.

Pizzolatto replied: "I'd have to first write a story that I, the actors and the network all loved. Loved so much it feels worth revisiting something we already did the right way.

"Then the actors would have to really want to do it. Then the network would have to foot the bill, which would be considerable."

He added: "So that's a lot. And it would start with me writing something on spec. Other than that, I could write a book without those constraints, but again, I'm doing other things and don't have the time or inclination at present."

People took to the comments to share their thoughts on the possibility of another series.

One said: "I believe this could save Humanity."

A second posted: "You guys need to return someday. For real. Best season ever made."

A third replied: "My favorite season of TV ever. Would be a dream to see those characters again."

The second and third seasons got something of a lukewarm reception, but the new season True Detective: Night Country has fared much better so far.
