'King of horror' Stephen King reveals the last movie that 'truly scared' him

If it's enough to spook horror legend Stephen King…

Stephen King has revealed the last movie that left him feeling 'truly scared.'

The 'King of horror' is dubbed so for a reason; he's penned more than 60 books, with dozens adapted into films and TV shows.

From It to Carrie all the way up to new releases, The Life of Chuck and The Institute, you've likely appreciated his legendary work at one point or another.

King also regularly recommends his favorite watches to his huge social media following, including this Amazon Prime Video thriller, which he labelled 'bone-shaking and terrifying,' on Twitter.

Ahead of the release of his dystopian drama, The Long Walk, which is set to hit theatres on September 12, King took to Reddit to answer fans' questions.

In the R/Movies community, he prompted: "I’m Stephen King! Ask me anything about The Long Walk book or movie."

He received a flood of responses, with people curious to know everything from his writing inspirations to his audiobook of choice if he were forced to be in a similar situation as The Long Walk (it's Game of Thrones, in case you were wondering).

But one eager fan was keen to hear what's been giving the master of horror the creeps recently, asking: "What was the last movie or TV show you watched that truly scared you?"

And King’s much-anticipated reply didn’t disappoint: Last TV show: The Fall of the House of Usher. Last scary movie: Weapons.”

Released on August 8, Weapons initially debuted with a flawless 100 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, quickly being hailed as the 'highest-rated horror movie of the decade.'

Since then, its score has settled to a still-impressive 94 per cent average across 339 reviews, and the film continues to draw rave acclaim.

Previously, over on Bluesky, King had sang Weapons' praises, writing: "WEAPONS: Confidently told, and very scary. I loved it," he wrote.

Starring Ozark’s Julia Garner, the film comes from Zach Cregger, the brains behind Barbarian - the twisty 2022 horror flick that scored a massive 92 per cent with critics. Now, people are saying this new release proves he’s cemented his status as a full-blown 'master of horror.'

Weapons opens with an unusual, but nonetheless nightmare-ish scenario; an entire third-grade class vanishes at exactly 2:17 am, with only one child - Alex (Days of Our Lives’ Cary Christopher) - left behind.

From there, things spiral. Justine Gandy (Garner), the kids’ teacher, suddenly finds herself at the center of suspicion, while also dealing with her own grief and the mounting paranoia from everyone around her.

We also meet Archer Graff (Avengers' Josh Brolin), a desperate dad hellbent on finding his son.

The story unfolds through the eyes of the characters and others in the community, making the mystery even darker.

Fans say the gripping movie had them hooked, all while shaking them with clever jumpscares and just the right amount of blood and gore.

Silver Screen Riot's Matt Oakes summed it up: "It’s everything all at once for the genre with a narrative and thematic cohesion few films manage to balance.

"A deliverance from the deadly serious trappings of prestige horror."
