Ryan Gosling reveals exactly why he got into 'trouble' following a sex scene with co-star Michelle Williams.

The Canadian actor, 42, has a well-known repertoire of movies, in which he plays the sought-after male lead. From La La Land to The Notebook, it's clear that Gosling hasn't ever been one to shy away from the steamier scenes.

Back in 2010, the star got in a touch of 'trouble' for a certain sex scene that felt a little too 'real'.

Gosling sparked controversy after starring in the indie smash-hit movie Blue Valentine alongside Williams, 42.

The plot of Blue Valentine follows the love life of couple, Cindy and Dean, down the pipeline of their dysfunctional marriage, alongside raising their daughter in the midst of trying to rekindle their relationship.

Speaking to The Guardian, Gosling hailed the film as an 'anti-romance' and revealed that authenticity and making the plot feel 'real' was something he was 'excited' by.

He said: "Director Derek Cianfrance wanted this movie to celebrate people's faults, to demystify romance and to make something that felt real. I was excited by that."

The infamous scene indeed 'felt real' - real enough that the film landed itself in classification rating battle in America.

The scene in question entailed Gosling, playing the character of Dean, performing oral sex on Williams, who played Cindy.

Noting the authenticity of the sex scene, Gosling explained: "The sex felt real – it wasn't sexy or 'a sex scene', and that's why we got into trouble."

The actor highlighted that the reason why the sex scene looked so 'real' was because he had done such a 'good job' in acting it out.

He revealed: "You shouldn't be penalised for doing a good job."

The controversial classification rating battle finally came to an end, with Blue Valentine being downgraded to an R rating, which informs audiences that those 'under 17 require an accompanying parent or adult guardian'.

The classification also warns that the film 'contains some adult material', with 'parents urged to learn more about the film before taking their young children with them.'

However, even with all the scandal attached to the all-too-real-looking oral sex scene, it's clear that this didn't stop Blue Valentine from being nominated for a whole host of accolades celebrating the film's box-office success.

Both Gosling and Williams were also nominated for Golden Globes for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for their roles of Dean and Cindy.
