Macaulay Culkin has finally put to bed a burning question that has baffled Home Alone fans for decades.

With the big day inching closer and closer, you might have already binge-watched through some iconic festive movies, including Home Alone.

Although it's been more than 35 years since the film hit theaters, dozens of us will be tuning in once again to watch the nostalgic classic.

In case you need reminding, the plot follows the story of Kevin McCallister, played by a young Culkin, who is left home alone when his family jet off to Paris for the holidays and forget to bring him along.

Fans have long been incredulous about how Kevin's parents managed such a monumental slip-up, though this is apparently explained by the fact the family sleep through their alarm clocks and have to make a chaotic mad dash to the airport and end up miscounting heads.

But that's not the only thing that has puzzled viewers for all this time. Many have had a burning question over what on Earth Kevin's parents did for work to earn their giant mansion outside of Chicago.

The family are clearly wealthy as the whole troop, including Kevin's four siblings Buzz, Megan, Linnie and Jeff, plus his cousins, aunts and uncles, are invited to the all-expenses paid holiday trip to France.

Not only that, but the McCallister home can sleep all 15 family members the night before the trip, and the mansion clearly sits in an affluent area to attract the likes of the 'Wet Bandits', Harry (Joe Pesci) and Marv (Daniel Stern), a pair of burglars who plan to ransack through the homes across the neighborhood before Christmas.

"Seriously, what did Kevin's dad do for a living?" said one on Reddit. "Honestly, even in the 90s that house had to be expensive."

Now, it appears 45-year-old Culkin has the answer, telling Postmedia in a recent interview what he has long considered Kevin's parents likely did to afford the property.

"I think his father was a corporate lawyer, that’s how they were able to afford such nice things and live in a nice neighbourhood.

“His mother was an interior decorator, that’s why the house was so nice.”

The actor and author's theory comes as the director of the movie, Chris Columbus, said he couldn't remember 'what the father did' to The Hollywood Reporter's Awards podcast.

“Back then, John and I had a conversation about it, and we decided on what the jobs were,” Columbus said. “We thought the mother, at the time, because we used mannequins in the basement — I do remember having a conversation — she was a very successful fashion designer.

"The father could have, based on John Hughes’ own experience, worked in advertising, but I don’t remember what the father did.”
