Barbie’s director Greta Gerwig has opened up about her decision to end the movie with THAT iconic joke.

(Obvious spoilers ahead.)

While there are many hilarious points throughout Barbie that fans are bursting into laughter with, no joke seems to be delivering as big of a jaw-dropping moment as the final line.

“Barbie has the best final line in a film I’ve ever seen,” said one fan on Twitter.

Another added: “I still can’t believe Greta Gerwig got away with that final line."

They are of course referring to the moment where Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, becomes human and excitedly walks up to a reception desk.

Many viewers expected Barbie to be rocking up to a job interview considering the giant smile on her face, however she declares she’s there to see her gynaecologist.

Roll credits.

“I knew I wanted to end on a mic drop kind of joke,” Gerwig told USA Today in a recent interview.

“When I was a teenage girl, I remember growing up and being embarrassed about my body, and just feeling ashamed in a way that I couldn’t even describe.”

She added: “I was like, I can give girls that feeling of ‘Barbie does it too’, that’s both funny and emotional.

“There are so many things like that throughout the movie,” the director said, “It was always about looking for the levity and the heart.”

The movie’s final line has made a huge splash online, with many praising Gerwig for the wit and cleverness of the joke.

However, she revealed in another interview with IndieWire that there were concerns about the line.

“There were some discussions about if that was the right ending, and ‘is that ok?’ or ‘is it upsetting’ or whatever,” said Gerwig.

“You get a certain amount of gifts as a filmmaker. You’ve got to use the gift that you’ve been given and I just know [that joke] is one of those gifts.”

When asked how she came up with the joke, Gerwig said that it just came to her while she was asleep and that she didn’t feel like she could take credit for it.

“It sort of came to me in a dream and then it was like, 'It can be no other way'. But really, I honestly can't believe that they let us make this movie.”

Well lucky for us, they did!
