Constantine 2 director says they will be doing everything to make it really R-rated

Francis Lawrence hopes the second instalment is well worth the wait.

Francis Lawrence is steaming ahead with his Constantine sequel and is hoping to make it worth the wait.

The original landed in 2005 and Keanu Reeves was able to see angels and demons walk through earth as he faced a battle with the underworld.

While it didn't initially do that well at the box office, it became a cult favorite for Reeves fans around the world and many wanted to see another instalment.

That was finally granted to us last year and we've been given an update on where the project is sitting.

Warner Bros.

In an interview with GameSpot, Lawrence said: "So Constantine 2 got obviously held up by the writers’ strike.

"And we had to jump through a bunch of hurdles to get control of the character again, because other people had control of the Vertigo stuff.

"We have control.

"Keanu and Akiva Goldsman and I have been in meetings and have been hashing out what we think the story is going to be, and there’s more meetings of those that have to happen–the script has to be written–but really hoping that we get to do Constantine 2, and make a real rated R version of it.”

That last little tidbit will no doubt get fans salivating at the thought of a proper R-rated Constantine film.

He has revealed in the past about how he thought he was sticking to the rules to make a PG-13 movie for the first instalment.

However, it was later rebranded to an R because of a grey area in the movie's content.

Warner Bros.

Speaking to The Wrap, he wish he went all out.

"If I was going to have to go have an R, I would have really made an R-rated movie," he said.

"I would have made it much scarier and much more violent and I would have really made an R-rated movie.”

He added: "The idea is this time, at least for me, is to really go at it and make a real R-rated Constantine which is, I think, what people always wanted originally, not the PG-13 version that just happens to get an R."

We'll have to wait until the SAG-AFTRA strike is fully over before the project gets off the ground properly but at least the gears are slowly starting to move in Hollywood.

There's no word on when we can expect to see the film hit the big screen but considering the script hasn't been written yet, we wouldn't be holding our breaths.
