An incident on the set of Eddie Murphy's new movie has resulted in several crew members being injured.

MGM Studios said the incident occurred while filming an action sequence which 'did not go as planned'.

The statement reads: “On April 20, an accident occurred on the set of The Pickup during a rehearsed 2nd unit action sequence. Unfortunately, the sequence did not go as planned and several members of the crew were injured as a result.

“We are still in the process of gathering facts on what happened and why, but first and foremost our thoughts are with those who are recovering.”

The statement continued: “The well-being of the entire crew and cast is our first priority, and we will continue to insist on the highest industry standards of safety while filming.

"All safety precautions were reviewed prior to and monitored during the shoot.”

MGM Studios also said it is now investigating what could have led to the incident on set, as well as confirming that crew members are now recovering.

The incident involved a second unit shoot, and it's not clear whether director and producer Tim Story was present.

According to a report from the Associated Press, the incident occurred when a truck 'locked up' and crashed into a car unexpectedly.

Injuries to crew reportedly range from bruises to broken bones in more serious cases.

The union IATSE represents crew members working in the film industry, and has confirmed that it is also looking into the situation.

A statement from the union said: “IATSE is aware of an accident that took place on the Georgia set of The Pickup and have started an inquiry."

It is understood that production on the upcoming movie has not been shut down as a result of the incident.

However, Variety has reported that filming on the second unit, where the incident occurred, has been paused.

The upcoming film stars Eddie Murphy in the lead role alongside Pete Davidson, Keke Palmer, Andrew Dice Clay, Eva Longoria, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Jack Kesy, and Marshawn Lynch.

At present the film's plot remains largely unknown, and it is being written by Matt Mider and Kevin Burrows.
