Netflix has finally announced a sequel to one of its ‘best science fiction thrillers’ - and fans don’t have to wait too long to dive back in.

When it comes to Spanish sci-fi offerings, Netflix truly does take the cake.

There are a heap of offerings to choose from; Bird Box Barcelona, Welcome to Eden and, of course, 2018 hit Mirage.

If you want more from the niche genre, then a quick search will lead you to discover the dystopian survival thriller, Nowhere, and the binge-worthy The Barrier from 2020.

Another movie fans are still obsessed with, despite being released back in 2019, is The Platform - and Netflix has recently revealed the Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia-directed movie is getting a follow-up.

Check out the heart-stopping trailer for The Platform 2 below:

The Platform, starring Iván Massagué, Zorion Eguileor and Antonia San Juan, sees a slab of food descending floor by floor in a secure prison.

The residents, who are transferred to the institution for various crimes, spend a month at a time on each floor and are all fed by the lowering platform.

Of course, those on the higher floors have the option to gorge on the food to their hearts desire, while those residing on the bottom floors are forced to fight for scraps.

Much like its predecessor, The Platform 2 is centred on the same, vertical prison where each floor houses two occupants.

However, the new movie will chronicle the life of a new protagonist, rather than Massagué’s Goreng.

An official plot synopsis for The Platform 2 reads: “As a mysterious leader imposes their rule in the Platform, a new resident becomes embroiled in the battle against this controversial method to fight the brutal feeding system.

“But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?”

After hearing the news that The Platform 2 would be heading to Netflix later this year, one excited X user wrote: “Oh man, this is great news!! The first one was really good!”

A second typed: “I’m so excited. The Platform is one the best sci-fi thriller movies I’ve ever seen.

“It’s an engrossing thriller, darkly comical and with a solid commentary on the social fabric. Can't wait to watch the sequel.”

Another agreed and commented: “First one was sick hopefully this one is on par.”

Someone else penned: “That’s so gross and I love it! Why is that?!?”

Thankfully, fans don’t have too long to wait because Netflix has revealed The Platform 2 is set to hit the service on 4 October, 2024.
