An 'amazing' crime series with a 'jaw-dropping' moment in its first episode comes 'strongly recommended' by Stephen King.

It's safe to say the horror author - who has written some 65 books - knows a thing or two about storytelling.

I'm sure a recommendation from Stephen King is among the ultimate compliments you could get as a showrunner.

The 77-year-old has always been keen to share his recommendations online, from an 'unbearably suspenseful' Netflix horror movie to a top-rated series with a 'Stranger Things' vibe.

And this particular series - which has fans 'yearning for more' - boasts an almost-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score.

Set in the late 1970s, the show follows two FBI agents tasked with exploring the dark psychology of murder in a bid to improve the understanding of criminal science.

The US series - from David Fincher and Charlize Theron - focuses on agents Holden Ford and Bill Tench (Jonathan Groff and Holt McCallany) and psychologist Wendy Carr (Anna Torv).

Together, they operate the FBI's Behavioral Science Unit in Virginia, getting scarily close to monstrous serial killers, with the hope of applying their new-found knowledge to solve ongoing cases.

It delves into a few notable real-life cases from the FBI's early days, including killers Edmund Kemper, Jerry Brudos, Richard Speck, and Monte Rissell.

Actor Cameron Britton even earned an Emmy nod for his haunting portrayal of Kemper.

The series in question is called Mindhunter and you can watch its trailer below.

Taking to Twitter, the King of Horror wrote: "MINDHUNTER, on Netflix: Strongly recommended.

"Other than a jaw-dropping moment in the first episode, very little gore."

Despite its popularity, the hit TV show was canceled after just two seasons - which earned a 97 percent rating over on Rotten Tomatoes.

Its critics' consensus reads: "Mindhunter distinguishes itself in a crowded genre with ambitiously cinematic visuals and a meticulous attention to character development."

Fans have also raved about the series, as one wrote: "Possibly the best show Netflix has made. No frills. Just amazing writing, directing, acting."

A second noted: "The attention to detail is remarkable," as a third agreed: "An absolute banger. True definition of a slow-burn."

Another fan bluntly put it: "The worst part of Mindhunter was we only had two seasons.

"The concept was genius and executed in a way that only Fincher could pull off." They added: "Worth a watch but be prepared to yearn for more."

Despite fan demand, Mindhunter was dropped by Netflix after two seasons. Executive producer Finch previously explained what had happened: "We went as far as we could until someone finally said to us, 'It makes no sense to produce this series like this, unless you can reduce the budget or make it more pop, so that more people will watch it.'

"We did not want to change our approach, so, respectfully, they told us that they were drawing a line under it.'"

Both seasons of Mindhunter are available to stream now on Netflix.
