Terrified Netflix fans say people should be 'taking notes' after watching Leave The World Behind

Some Netflix viewers have been left 'pissed off' by one part of the movie, but others argue they're missing the point.

Netflix users are flooding to social media in horror after watching Leave The World Behind.

Netflix's new apocalyptic psychological thriller may've only been released onto the streaming service two days ago (8 December) but people have already flocked to watch it - anything to make a change from the constant Christmas songs and movies we're all being subjected to.

And Leave The World Behind has caused quite the stir online. Catch the movie's trailer here:

Leave the World Behind is based on Rumaan Alam's 2010 novel of the same name, and the movie is written, produced and directed by Sam Esmail.

The film's official synopsis, per Netflix, reads: "A family vacation on Long Island is interrupted by two strangers bearing news of a mysterious blackout.

"As the threat grows more imminent, both families must decide how best to survive the potential crisis, all while grappling with their own place in this collapsing world."

And if that isn't enough to entice you into watching it, it's cast includes the likes of Julia Roberts, Myha'la, Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali.

Alas, some viewers who've already raced to see the movie weren't all happy with one specific part.

Viewers' faces when they got to the ending.

Some Netflix users flocked to X - formerly known as Twitter - to complain about Leave the World Behind's ending.

One user said: "I just finished Leave The World Behind. What kind of f**king ending!"

"The ending pissed me off for real not worth it," another commented.

A third wrote: "Mann what. the ending pissed me off so badly i hit the dislike button."

However, other viewers have stuck up for the film, arguing those who didn't like the ending missed the point of the movie entirely.

A user defended: "The fact that everyone is upset about that ending from the movie Leave The World behind instead of actually LISTENING to what might possibly happening in our future as a reality is the real disappointment here. Instead of being angry, people should really take notes."

"Have y'all watched Leave the world behind? I feel so uneasy because this s**t can easily happen TOMORROW," a second added.

And a final resolved: "The ending was perfect, I don't understand how people don't appreciate it."

Some people have been left frustrated by the ending.

And in an interview with Variety, Alam - who's novel the movie is based on - reflected on Leave the World Behind's ending, noting he found it 'so satisfying and so rewarding' that it ends with 'the particular jolt of humor' Esmail is so good at.

The writer resolved: "It’s sort of self-reflective because he’s a filmmaker. He’s also worked in television, and he’s sort of asserting something about the power of that medium, and its hold over this one character.

"I say it’s funny, but I don’t think it’s a joke. I don’t think it’s a joke on Rose. I don’t think it’s a joke on the audience. I don’t think it’s a joke on 'Friends.'

"It’s a reminder that art is kind of a salve. The theatrical experience of watching this movie is so powerful because I’ve had the chance to see audiences respond to the ending three times now, and nobody really knows what to make of it. They’re like, is this funny? Is this scary? Is it really over? And I love that so much."

Leave the World Behind is available to stream on Netflix now.
