A number of epic action movies have just been added to Netflix and UNILAD RANKED has rounded up the top five.

With so many movies on Netflix - and different titles coming and going every month - it can feel almost impossible to whittle down exactly what you want to watch over the weekend.

And if you think you've already scrolled through *all* the action films on Netflix recently, then think again.

Because a number of highly rated movies have just been added to the streaming platform and looking at their Rotten Tomatoes scores, audiences think they're definitely worth a watch.

This week's UNILAD RANKED gives you five epic movies that have recently been added to Netflix. Which one will you choose?

5) Mission: Impossible (1996)

There's now been a whopping eight Mission: Impossible movies, with the most recent arriving in theaters back in May.

The first five movies have just been added to Netflix, which will certainly keep you busy over the weekend.

The first instalment - directed by Brian de Palma - had a 65 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, but faired better with audiences, who gave it a more modest 71 percent.

Alongside Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames (Lilo and Stitch) and Simon Pegg (Hot Fuzz) have also had recurring roles in the series, as well as Vanessa Kirby (Pieces of a Woman) and Frederick Schmidt (The Marker).

Cruise stars as agent of the Impossible Mission Force (IMF), Ethan Hunt, who's sent on many an operation in a bid to tackle all manners of threats against humanity.

Apparently, de Palma convinced Cruise to set the first act of the movie in Prague, which at the time was rarely seen in Hollywood movies.

The series is considered to be one of the top movie franchises of all time, with one person writing on X: "I’m starting to really realize the mission impossible series is genuinely one of the best series ever."

4) Pacific Rim (2013)

Pacific Rim was released back in 2013 and stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam and Charlie Day.

The movie has a 72 percent score on the Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, and a slightly higher score among audiences, at 77 percent.

The film - which was directed by Guillermo del Toro - charts the feud between robots and monsters and what would happen if they came head to head.

On one side, the Kaijus are huge, sky-scraper sized monsters that come from a portal in the ocean. But rather than a typical military response, the world’s army decide to design their own giant robots known as Jaegers, to defeat their enemy.

Apparently, 100 Kaijus and 100 Jaegers were designed for the movie, but only a fraction of them were actually used.

In fact, it's said that the filmmakers would vote for their favourites.

One fan wrote on X: "The greatest movie of all time (Pacific Rim) is now on Netflix so I’ll be watching that a few times this week."

Another added: "'Today we are cancelling the apocalypse!' Love love love this movie, despite a few criticisms. Apparently some of it was shot on 16mm! It’s one of those movies I can watch again any time and it instantly brightens my mood."

Meanwhile, others called it a 'cinematic masterpiece' that everyone should watch.

3) V for Vendetta (2005)

V for Vendetta was a huge hit when it first arrived in theaters back in 2005, so it makes sense that people are excited it's made its way to Netflix this week.

The movie has a 73 percent score on the Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, but faired much better with audiences, with a whopping 90 percent Popcornmeter score.

Directed by James McTeigue, the film starred Hugo Weaving (The Lord of the Rings) as V and Natalie Portman (Black Swan) as Evey.

The political action movie - which draws inspiration from the story of Guy Fawkes - is set in a dystopian and futuristic setting in England, following a period of pandemic and famine.

The country is taken over by a number of oppressive dictators who use a regime of fear to control the population.

With Weaving wearing a mask in the movie, filmmakers struggled over how to bring the character to life. The actor's voice was a major factor, and so the entire dialogue was re-recorded after the movie was produced to make sure it did not appear muffled in the film.

"V for Vendetta is on Netflix. One of my fav," one person wrote on X.

2) The Deer Hunter (1978)

Set in the backdrop of the US-Vietnam war, the 1978 movie, The Deer Hunter, is a war film which was co-written and directed by Michael Cimino.

The movie has a 86 percent score on the Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, but earned an impressive 91 percent Popcornmeter score.

It stars Robert De Niro as Michael, Christopher Walken as Nick and John Savage as Steven - three friends from a working class town in Pennsylvania, who enlist in the military and head out to Vietnam.

When filming The Deer Hunter, De Niro insisted on using a real bullet during the tense Russian roulette scene.

According to Cimino, De Niro requested a live cartridge and, somewhat surprisingly, co-star John Cazale agreed ‘without protest’.

It's considered to be one of the best films ever made, with one person writing on X: "The Russian roulette scene in The Deer Hunter (1978) is one of the most harrowing and unforgettable moments in cinema."

The first place goes to Captain Phillips (Sony Pictures)

1) Captain Phillips (2013)

Coming in at first place is the 2013 movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks.

The movie has a 93 percent score on the Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, but faired slightly less with audiences, securing an 89 percent Popcornmeter score.

Alongside Hanks, who played the captain of the Maersk Alabama containership, Barkhad Abdi starred as Muse, the leader of a group of Somali pirates who climb aboard and take the crew hostage.

The nail-biting movie sees Phillips attempt to save his team and return home safely.

Abdi's performance won both a BAFTA award and an Oscar nomination, as he was recognised in the category of Best Supporting Actor.

In a 2014 interview with the New Yorker, Abdi recalled being cast in the movie after responding to an open casting call at the local community centre.

Abdi established himself as an impressive first-time actor by improvising the iconic line 'I'm the captain now', and learned to swim and shoot for the role after previously claiming to have had many talents in a bid to help him land the part.

For all of his efforts, however, Abdi was paid just $65,000 (£57,600). For comparison, Captain Phillips was a $55 million dollar film.
