Netflix is set to deliver a sequel to one of its most shocking and 'highly underrated' horror movies just in time for spooky season.

Cast your mind back to 2019, when the concept of 'lockdown' was entirely unheard of and we were all looking forward to the return of the roaring 20s.

That was the year Netflix released what turned out to be the most popular Spanish film in the streaming service's history at the time; a chilling movie set in a prison split across different levels.

Inside, a slab of food descends floor by floor, meaning those at the top get to enjoy a filling meal, while those on the lower platforms get more and more hungry, and more and more desperate.

The movie has received an impressive score of 80 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, with viewers praising its chilling storyline.

After watching the flick, one Twitter user posted: "I did not hear nearly enough chatter about The Platform, and randomly chose it to watch one time and loved it. I think it’s highly underrated."

Other viewers insisted there was really no reason not to watch the movie, writing: "If you loved Parasite please watch The Platform. Watch it if you like Bong Joon Ho‘s films, if you hate capitalism, if you love horror films, if you’re bored, if you support socialism or if you’ve run out of stuff to watch. Just watch #ThePlatform."

Five years on, fans now get to return to The Platform with a sequel that's set to arrive on Netflix in October.

Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia is on board to return to the movie as director, with Milena Smit and Hovik Keuchkerian set to star.

A synopsis reveals that a 'mysterious leader' is now laying down the law in the Platform, while a new resident begins to fight back against the feeding system.

“But when eating from the wrong plate becomes a death sentence, how far would you be willing to go to save your life?," it asks.

Netflix first shared the news of the upcoming movie in 2023, and last week it dropped the trailer to give fans a glimpse of what's in store.

"The story is far from over...," Netflix wrote as it shared images from the sequel.

Fans have shared their excitement for the new release, with one taking to Twitter to write: "i would most definitely be watching thisssss [sic]. i’ll rewatch Platform 1 before this is out."

"First one was something else.. definitely checking this out," added another.

The Platform 2 is set to arrive on Netflix on 4 October.
