Netflix fans say they'll 'never recover' after watching a series with an ending so sad, it 'ripped them apart.'

The streaming giant seems to be on a roll with its tear-jerking content at the minute.

A new Spanish series stirred up strong emotions which had viewers in a 'chokehold' earlier this year.

Sometimes, a good cry can be cathartic every now and then, but viewers of this coming-of-age series warned they were 'drowning' in their own tears by the end of it.

Set in Seattle, the show stars Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as friends Tully and Kate, who first meet as neighbours at the tender age of 14.

Forging an unbreakable bond, the show charts the pair's turbulent lives through the decades, right the way through to when they're in their forties.

You can watch the trailer below:

Named Firefly Lane after the street the friends grew up on and is based on the novel of the same name by bestselling author Kristin Hannah.

The first series, consisting of 10 episodes, debuted in 2021. Despite proving popular on Netflix, the series concluded with its second season, which released in two parts.

The first half dropped in December 2022, with the second instalment arriving last April. The final lot of episodes racked up 251.5 million views within around 10 weeks of its release.

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one fan, sharing a clip of the show, said: "One of the saddest tv endings i’ve ever saw, i’ve never cried so much as i did when i saw this for the first time." (sic). They added: "The show is everything to me i’ve watched it like twice."

Another fan replied: "i will never recover" as a second admitted: "The ending ripped me apart."

A third said: "I have never cried so much over a TV show! Pretty much nonstop crying through the 2nd season."

A fourth agreed: "Just finished it now. Drowning in my tears".

Meanwhile creator Maggie Friedman told Netflix Tudum that the show's final seven episodes were some of the most difficult to write.

“The emotion of it was just exhausting. It really took a lot out of [Chalke and Heigl]." She added: "I feel so proud of how they turned out. They’re my favorite episodes of the whole series.”

Tissues at the ready? Both seasons of Firefly Lane are available to stream now on Netflix.
