People are praising 93% Fresh Netflix horror that's making people physically gag

This one is not for the faint of heart

As wholesome Christmas celebrations get into full swing and spooky season slowly fades out, horror fans are starting to turn to long-forgotten films to give them their fill of gore and terror.

And after rediscovering the gruesome 2016 film Raw, it looks like thrill-seekers have found exactly what they were looking for, with some scenes from the cannibalism flick making them 'physically gag'. Perfect.

If you're not familiar with Raw, the horror flick tells the story of 16-year-old Justine who, after being a vegetarian her whole life, gets her first taste of raw meat - and likes it.

A synopsis of the film reads: "In Justine’s family everyone is a vet and a vegetarian. At 16, she’s a gifted teen ready to take on her first year in vet school, where her older sister also studies.

"There, she gets no time to settle: hazing starts right away. Justine is forced to eat raw meat for the first time in her life. Unexpected consequences emerge as her true self begins to form."

The film, which stars Garance Marillier, Ella Rumpf, and Rabah Nait Oufella, has a certified fresh score of 93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes' Tomatometer, despite its unbearably sickening scenes.

Critics can't speak highly enough of this film, praising its use of cannibalism as a metaphor for puberty and coming-of-age, and offering horror fans a strong female lead who's in control of her supernatural urges.

"Raw is a beautifully told tale that is gruesome and, as a woman, very familiar," writes one critic.

"It's a mesmerising film that leaves you filled with discomfort," raved another.

Raw is a stomach-churning watch.

Horror fans tend to agree with the critics, and absolutely love this stomach-churning film - though they've confessed that some of the more revolting scenes stayed with them long after the credits started to roll.

Without giving anything away, the main offenders that made viewers feel particularly queasy are known as 'the hair scene' and 'the finger scene'.

Given the overlaying cannibalism themes, I'll let you figure out what they might entail.

"Man the finger and hair scenes made my stomach turn," commented one fan.

"I remember watching the hair scene and thinking 'this is terrible and really gratuitous' but I couldn't stop watching it," admitted a second.

A third recalled: "This one made me mega super duper very uncomfortable in all the best ways. The hair stuff was just a whole big NO."

A fourth impressed gore fan added: "Not many movies make me physically gag...the hair scene in this one most definitely did."

And a fifth penned: "I remember liking it the first time I saw it but never understood why everyone said it was so f****d up. Then I rewatched it a year or two ago and it almost made me sick."

So, in case you haven't gathered by now, this one is definitely not for the faint of heart.

But if you're still up for it, Raw is available to stream now on Netflix in the US.
