Timothée Chalamet's co-star has revealed the reason why he refused a butt double in the movie, Marty Supreme.

Directed by Josh Safdie, the movie is loosely inspired by the table tennis pro Marty Reisman and landed in theaters on Christmas Day.

Alongside Chalamet, Kevin O'Leary plays Milton Rockwell, an entrepreneur who is married to Kay Stone (played by Gwyneth Paltrow).

In one particular scene, O'Leary has to spank Chalamet with a ping pong paddle. And as it turns out, despite their being a stunt double on hand, Chalamet reportedly wanted to do the scene himself.

Speaking to Variety, O'Leary explained that although initially, the plan was to use a fake paddle to make the hits softer, the prop broke on the first try, which meant he had to use a real one.

It also took around 40 takes and 'went on for hours' - which sounds extremely painful.

“When it came time to whack him, there was a stunt a**. There was a double,” O’Leary said. “[Chalamet] wouldn’t do it. He said he’ll do it himself. He didn’t want some other a** immortalized.”

He added: “Josh was saying, 'You’ve got to wind up harder'.

“I was really whacking him.”

O'Leary went on to explain that the scene was 'pivotal' for the characters because 'he had p****d me off so much and insulted me so many times that capital punishment was correct'.

“I never felt satisfied that he suffered enough for what he did,” he added.

“Even now, I’m still p****d.”

Chalamet's role in the movie has already bagged him best actor nominations at the Golden Globes and the Critics Choice Awards.

Speaking about the movie, he told the BBC: “You know, when you're in your early twenties, you're an idiot.

“And this movie, in large part, is about being an idiot in your early twenties.

“And if on top of that, you have a passion that you're singular about, you risk looking foolish in addition to being an idiot.”

Opening up about his confidence in the film - which made $17.4 million at the box office in its opening weekend - Chalamet added: “This is an original film at a time where a lot of original films aren't made.

“And there's no part of me that's a salesman that's saying this, but I've never been more confident in saying, 'Hey, if you bring yourself to see this movie, you won't be let down'. It's really like a slingshot.”
