James Gunn says there have been discussions about a DC and Marvel crossover movie

The new head of DC Studios says he would be lying if talks were already underway about the idea.

Superhero movie fans have been blessed with some unbelievable content over the past few years.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) franchises have been blowing everyone away with their world-building.

There are enthralling characters, epic battles against God-like villains, and rich storytelling.

But there is something that could be on the horizon that would no doubt leave fans cheering in their cinema seats.

James Gunn has teased there could one day be a crossover movie between the MCU and the DCEU.

The new co-chief of DC Studios says there have already been discussions about how this would play out.

He's been in a crossover of sorts after directing the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy for Marvel before taking over the helm at DC Studios.

Speaking to Empire Magazine, he was quizzed on whether we could see the likes of Batman and Superman going up against Spider-Man and Captain Marvel.

He replied: “Who knows?... That’s many years away, though.

“I think we have to establish what we’re doing [at DC] first. I would be lying to say that we haven’t discussed it. But all discussions have been very, very light and fun.”

It's not out of the realm of possibility, especially with the current era of superhero movies.

Marvel and DC have been playing with the concept of the multiverse recently in order to make some outstanding cinematic moments.

Spider-Man: No Way Home saw three superheroes in one film, with Tom Holland, Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield all donning the spidey suit to save the day.

Similarly, The Flash will utilise the multiverse to allow Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck to come back as Batman in the same movie.

While it can sometimes hurt your brain to workout how the multiverse makes sense, it's a fantastic trope that is being increasingly employed to bring in new or old characters.

That's how DC and Marvel would be able to get away with a crossover film. Or, they could do something else entirely.

But, judging from what James Gunn said, it's definitely not high on the priority list at the moment.

Marvel is trying to establish its new realm of superheroes and superhero stories in its post-Avengers world.

DC is similarly trying to reinvent its entire extended universe and Gunn has teased there will be loads of projects on the horizon.

But at least we know a DC x Marvel crossover isn't completely off the books.
