James Cameron has hit out at the trolls ahead of the release of Avatar 2.

The director has already warned fans that they will almost certainly need to take a couple of loo breaks for the next instalment of the mind-bending saga.

And he's now taken pre-emptive aim at any would-be film critics who might look to throw some shade his way.

Speaking about the new film, Avatar: The Way of Water, the 67-year-old said he could not care less what the trolls think, because he's sure they'll change their tune when they actually see the film. Have a look at the trailer here:

Cameron told Empire Magazine: "The trolls will have it that nobody gives a s**t and they can’t remember the characters' names or one damn thing that happened in the movie.

"Then they see the movie again and go, 'Oh, okay, excuse me, let me just shut the f**k up right now', so I’m not worried about that."

    Alright, Jimmy. Jeez.

Almost 13 years in the making, the long-awaited sequel centres on Jake Sully and Neytiri, and the renewed threats that face the Na'vi people.

Some keen-eyed fans also think it will see the return of a familiar and very unpleasant face, too.

A synopsis for the film reads: "Jake Sully and Neytiri have formed a family and are doing everything to stay together. However, they must leave their home and explore the regions of Pandora.

"When an ancient threat resurfaces, Jake must fight a difficult war against the humans."

And despite having a run time of 162 minutes, the Titanic director said he isn't interested in people criticising the film's duration, either, especially in the era of streaming.

He added: "I don’t want anybody whining about length when they sit and binge-watch [television] for eight hours.

"I can almost write this part of the review. 'The agonisingly long three-hour movie…' It’s like, give me a f**king break. I’ve watched my kids sit and do five one-hour episodes in a row.

"Here’s the big social paradigm shift that has to happen: it’s okay to get up and go pee."

The new film has been over a decade in the making.

As well as seeing the return of Zoe Saldaña and Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver is also back for another go - though not as Dr Grace Augustine, who - SPOILER - died at the end of the last film.

Instead, the 72-year-old has been cast in a brand-new role as teenager Kiri, the adopted daughter of Jake and Neytiri.

Speaking about the new role, she said: "I think we all pretty much remember what we were feeling as adolescents. I certainly do. I was 5' 10" or 5' 11" when I was 11.

"I felt strongly that Kiri would feel awkward a lot of the time. She's searching for who she is. I was thrilled to be given that challenge by [director James Cameron]."

Avatar: The Way of Water is due for release on 16 December.
