Harrison Ford has suggested that the newest Indiana Jones film will be the last as the character has reached 'the end of his journey'.

Next year, the current untitled Indiana Jones project will hit cinemas, with Ford reprising the role of the famed character once more.

This fifth film will be the first instalment of the Indiana Jones series that hasn't been directed by Steven Spielberg.

Instead, the famed director has handed over to James Mangold, known for films such as Logan and Ford V Ferrari.

But fear not, Spielberg fans, as the filmmaker is still a producer on the film.

In an interview with Empire, Harrison Ford spoke about the upcoming film and how it would be a 'sunset' for the legendary character.

He said: "I just thought it would be nice to see one where Indiana Jones was at the end of his journey. If a script came along that I felt gave me a way to extend the character."

Alongside the new director, the script was worked on by Jez and John-Henry Butterworth, who also worked on Ford V Ferrari with Mangold.

Mangold spoke to Empire in the same piece about the pressures of directing an Indiana Jones film, and what it was like to sit in the chair Spielberg had kept warm for so many years. He also discussed the direction in which he was taking the series for this final instalment.

He said: "It became really important to me to figure out how to make this a movie about a hero at sunset.

“The issues I brought up about Indy’s age were not things I thought were being addressed in the material being developed at the time. There were ‘old’ jokes, but the material itself wasn’t about it.

"To me, whatever your greatest liability, you should fly straight towards that. If you try to pretend it’s not there, you end up getting slings and arrows the whole way."

It really does look like the fifth film will be the final offering in the Indiana Jones universe.

Believe it or not, Ford is now 80 years old, and playing in an action film at any age surely provides it challenges.

Back in September, the veteran actor brought the first teaser trailer for the film to Disney's D23 Expo, alongside Mangold and co-star Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Emotionally addressing the applauding audience, Ford said: “This is it. I will not fall down for you again. But thank you so much.”
