Eagle-eyed fans think they may have spotted Tom Cruise as Iron Man in the new Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer.

The trailer that aired during Super Bowl halftime gave fans a further glimpse into the highly-anticipated movie.

There have been rumours of multiple members of the multiverse making appearances in the new movie, with Charles Xavier, Wanda Maximoff and now (potentially) Iron Man being spotted by fans.

Fans took to Twitter to share their theories. One user said: 'So my thinking is that Tom Cruise’s will be Superior Iron Man, one who managed to perfect the Ultron program and has it under his control'.

We should clarify that the Iron Man fans think they saw isn't Robert Downey Jr's beloved portrayal of the character but actually Tom Cruise as a 'Superior Iron Man'.

Superior Iron Man is actually a character already - he came from Marvel's divisive Axis event, in which some superheroes and villains morally switched; so good guys became bad, bad guys became good.

Given that the premise for the new Dr Strange film is literally the 'multiverse of madness', it's not unreasonable to assume that an evil version of Iron Man exists and could be played by Tom Cruise.

Meanwhile, other users pointed out a specific moment in the trailer that does look a little like Iron Man, captioning the post: 'this is Tom Cruise. This is superior Iron Man. This is him my head is sweating rn'.

Still, the idea Cruise joining the franchise isn't new - suggestions have been floating around since 2018.

However, the actor stated at the time that the possibility was 'Not close, and I love Robert Downey Jr. I can't imagine anyone else in that role, and I think it's perfect for him'.

Since then, rumours have continued to grow, with Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld dropping hints that Cruise could appear in the series.

Speaking on The Big Thing podcast with Kristian Harloff, Liefeld seemed to suggests fans weren't far off with their Cruise cameo theory.

In response to Harloff bringing up 'rumours that Tom Cruise is gonna pop in as Iron Man, there's rumours that you're gonna get a variant of Reed Richards in there', Liefeld said 'it's safe to say, some of the stuff you just said that's out there, it's happening, it's been seen'.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness hits cinemas on May 6, 2022.
