The ocean is definitely up there with one of the scariest places on Earth and some TikTok users have called it a ‘death trap' after watching an unnerving video.

The clip has been viewed almost 6 million times since being posted on the social media platform last month.

The terrifying footage was uploaded with the caption: “Welcome to the deep blue death trap.”

The brief video appears to show a person pouring a drink from a cup into the ocean while they are on an oil field.

Within seconds of the cup’s contents coming into contact with the ocean, swarms of fish seemingly appear out of nowhere and rush to the area.

Some TikTok users deduced that the fish appear quickly in hopes of consuming any food that enters the sea, thus react quickly.

Others said it was things like this that should make people think twice about diving into the open ocean.

“This is exactly what I think of every time I hear about someone jumping off a cruise ship,” one user remarked.

“All I can think about is that dude who jumped in and his friends just watched him,” another added.

The original poster replied and said: “I’ll jump in when I get off one day and let ya’ll know how it goes. The fish aren’t scary but the sharks that are deeper [are].”

In recent months other videos have circulated showing how fish behave when actual food is thrown into the ocean.

In April, a clip went viral on Reddit's OddlySatisfying board and was upvoted just under 100,000 times.

In the video the person records themselves throwing an apple into the ocean while atop an oil rig.

Within seconds, countless fish race to the area, circle the apple and eat it before dispersing seconds later, showing just how many fish there are beneath the surface.

Fish then suddenly appear out of nowhere.

Explaining the footage, one Reddit user commented: “These fish are probably waiting for food items to be dropped.

“The camera is set up to record a phenomenon that had been observed before so we can guess the workers and fish already have a bit of a relationship going.

“The fish are primed to expect and react to the apple.

"Also, it's probably easier to see items falling from the sky from beneath a couple of feet of water than we estimate it to be; they would appear as silhouettes against a bright background.”

Pretty creepy, eh?
