Horrifying video shows one of the reasons falling overboard is a ‘death trap’

The original poster was adamant that the aquatic critters that featured in the footage weren't 'scary'

Tens of thousands of people across the globe are thought to have Thalassophobia, which is a deep-rooted fear of the ocean.

Whether it’s the assortment of terrifying critters getting your back up or the body of water’s sheer size, it’s understandable why some people are hesitant to clamber in for a swim.

If you’re someone who isn’t scared of the ocean, then you may change your mind after watching a frightening TikTok video, causing some users to claim the water is nothing more than a ‘death trap’.

The video in question was posted by a user who goes by @thetrevorlopez in 2023 and appears to show a person pouring some sort of drink from a cup into the ocean while onboard an oil field.

Uploaded with the eerie caption ‘Welcome to the deep blue death trap’, the clip then captures something truly terrifying. Check out the goosebump-raising video below:

Within seconds of the cup’s contents coming into contact with the ocean, swarms of fish seemingly appear out of nowhere and rush to the area.

Some TikTok users were swiftly deducing that the fish appear quickly in hopes of consuming any food that enters the sea, thus reacting quickly.

Others said it was things like this that should make people think twice about diving into the open ocean.

“This is exactly what I think of every time I hear about someone jumping off a cruise ship,” one user remarked.

“All I can think about is that dude who jumped in and his friends just watched him,” another added.

The original poster replied and said: “I’ll jump in when I get off one day and let ya’ll know how it goes. The fish aren’t scary but the sharks that are deeper [are].”

In recent months other videos have circulated showing how fish behave when actual food is thrown into the ocean.

Previously, a clip went viral on Reddit's OddlySatisfying board showing a person throwing an apple into the ocean while atop an oil rig.

Within seconds, countless fish race to the area, circle the apple and eat it before dispersing seconds later, showing just how many fish there are beneath the surface.

Explaining the footage, one Reddit user commented: “These fish are probably waiting for food items to be dropped.

“The camera is set up to record a phenomenon that had been observed before so we can guess the workers and fish already have a bit of a relationship going.

“The fish are primed to expect and react to the apple. Also, it's probably easier to see items falling from the sky from beneath a couple of feet of water than we estimate it to be; they would appear as silhouettes against a bright background.”

Weird, right?
