Woody Harrelson says Matthew McConaughey’s dad’s hospital comment is more ‘proof’ they may be brothers

Matthew McConaughey's dad made a comment that the actor thinks is 'proof' that Matthew McConaughey might be his brother.

Woody Harrelson has explained how a comment made by Matthew McConaughey's father has fueled his theory that he might be his brother.

Last month, the lives of both actors took an interesting turn when McConaughey, 53, discussed his bond with Harrelson, 61, and his suspicion that they might share the same father.

The Interstellar actor believes that he might have been conceived during a fling between his mother, Mary Kathleen McCabe, a former kindergarten teacher and Harrelson’s father, Charles Harrelson, a hitman who died in prison in 2007.

In a new interview with Esquire, Harrelson claims that McConaughey’s father refused to go to the hospital with McCabe, telling her: “That ain’t my son.”

Harrelson has said that he wants to take DNA test to find out if the long-time friends are actually related.

The new information comes after McConaughey shared details about the possible family connection on Kelly Ripa’s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast last month.

He said: “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line. And that’s part of our bromance, right?

“My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”

He continued: “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families. And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew’. It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

The How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days actor said that his mother's comment motivated him to investigate his family history and whether she might have had a fling with Harrelson's father.

“We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce," he explained.

The pair have starred together in TV shows and films, including True Detective.

“Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a ‘knew’ moment.”

Not only are the pair friends, they have also appeared in a bunch of TV and film projects together, including True Detective and the upcoming Apple TV+ series Brother From Another Mother.

In an interview with Stephen Colbert, Harrelson said: “We want to go and test, but for him, it’s a much more big deal. I mean he feels like he is losing a father. But I’m like, no, you’re gaining a different father and a brother.”
