‘English teacher’ and ‘gym teacher’ explained as Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce announce engagement

Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are tying the knot.

Today (August 26), The Tortured Poets Department record-maker shared the joyful news that her football player boyfriend Kelce has popped the question.

"Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married," she announced on Instagram alongside a series of photos of her with Kelce.

In the snaps, the pair were seen in a flower-filled garden and Chiefs tight end Kelce was on one knee. Other snaps showed the celebrity couple looking extremely loved up as they showcased Swift's huge engagement ring.

She proceeded to share post a heart on her Instagram story with her song, 'So High School', playing in the background.

But why has Swift referred to herself as an English teacher and Kelce as a gym teacher?

Well, long before she even started dating the 35-year-old NFL star, Swift's fans said that she gave 'English teacher vibes'.

One reason for this is the numerous literary references she's made in her music over the years — for example Romeo and Juliet in 'Love Story'. Elsewhere her track 'New Romantics' she mentions Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter.

Then there's the fact that Swift's appearance is also quite English teacher coded (in the best way, of course).

Somebody tweeted in July: "Taylor would be my favorite english teacher and i'd probably have a crush on her."

A different social media user penned back in 2023 alongside a compilation video of Swift meeting a series of young fans: "I just realized that one of the reasons i love Taylor Swift is because she gives such english teacher vibes and as a person who gets emotionally attached to english teachers i get it. I mean look at this video of taylor with children."

With this in mind, when Swift started dating Kelce, many Swifties started referring to the sports star as a gym teacher in light of his football career.

Fans have been sent into a frenzy in the wake of Swift's quirky and heartfelt engagement announcement.

"Can we talk about how she called herself english teacher n travis gym teacher [sic]," one person said on Twitter.

"Taylor being aware that we call her english teacher," noted another.

A third went on to say of the singer's social media post: "Okay but the caption?! Taylor’s aware of all the English teacher and gym teacher jokes."
